I'm In, Part 7. Nagra IV-S, Beans Spilled Everywhere...

Yeah, I know. my Ki's disease was in remission but i had a laps and managed to work on acquiring the Nagra IV-S with a custom made large reel adaptor for my 10.5" reels (similar to my Stellavox large reel adaptor).

The Nagra IV-S in in near perfect condition. Outside of a small repair of the custom large reel adaptor.

I now have at least one tape deck from the 4 Swiss manufacturers (ReVox, Studer, Stellavox, and now Nagra)

Thanks. The QGB is really rare (like you mentioned) and difficult to find, let alone finding one n good working condition.

if a QGB crosses my path in reasonable condition, I'll definitely consider acquiring it.

For now, and the foreseeable future, the custom passive large reel adaptor will fill the need.

If you are not going to use time code, it is better to get rid of the time code head and change the playback head to a 2.75mm stereo head.

If I find a 2.75mm head (DIN/Butterfly), I guess I can pick one up if I get curious.

However, most master tape copies in the US were done with 2.0mm NAB heads and that's what is on most of my tape decks. For consistency, I'll most likely keep it as is with the NAB 2.0mm heads I have (I also have a spare set).

BTW: I believe my unit is only capable of generating a pilot tone in it's current configuration state instead of being equipped to generate the SMPTE time code. I don't/won't be using either if I use the IV-S for recording.

Update:

My extra set of Nagra IV-S/Nagra T heads (Playback and Record) were sent off to JRF Magnetic Sciences last week for Inspection and relap.

They have returned with a fresh relap. They will go back into my extras case along with a set of Ruby tape guides and other things.
