  • Tape Meeting in Seattle

Feb 9th 2016 - Jeff Jacobs of J-Corder (http://www.j-corder.com/) will talk to us about the evolution of open reel tape recorders. He will bring along one or two reel-to-reel machines that he has refurbished, and play some prerecorded tapes.

Jeff rebuilds Technics and Pioneer tape decks, among others, and has recently opened a store in Gig Harbor where he will sell vintage equipment from the 70s and 80s. He has just become a dealer for the new Technics line of electronics.

For directions and times, go to the Pacific Northwest Audio Society website: http://www.audiosociety.org/meeting.html

Quite a big turnout. Amir was there as well as about 30 other souls that made the trek.

Wow 30 people...Used be on Thursdays but it seems you have changed to Tuesdays. How did Jeff's setup with machine and taped sound? He has had a different view of tapes and sound quality from the beginning.

Visited Jeff's new showroom last month and heard probably the same tapes... I think you should invite Jeff to your studio and play him the proper analog tapes!

                      Remember this from Alice' Restaurant.

It was about four or five hours later that Alice--(remember Alice? There's a
Song about Alice.)--Alice came by and, with a few nasty words to Obie on the
Side, bailed us out of jail, and we went back to the church, had another
Thanksgiving dinner that couldn't be beat, and didn't get up until the next
Morning, when we all had to go to court. We walked in, sat down, Obie came
In with the twenty-seven 8 x 10 colored glossy pictures with the circles and
Arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one, sat down.

Man came in, said, "All rise!" We all stood up, and Obie stood up with the
Twenty-seven 8 x 10 colored glossy pictures, and the judge walked in, sat
Down, with a seein' eye dog and he sat down. We sat down.

                      Obie looked at the seein' eye dog . . . then at the twenty-seven 8 x 10
Colored glossy pictures with the circles and arrows and a paragraph on the
Back of each one . . . and looked at the seein' eye dog . . . and then at
The twenty-seven 8 x 10 colored glossy pictures with the circles and arrows
And a paragraph on the back of each on and began to cry.

Because Obie came to the realization that it was a typical case of American
Blind justice, and there wasn't nothin' he could do about it, and the judge
Wasn't gonna look at the twenty-seven 8 by 10 colored glossy pictures with
The circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explainin'
What each one was, to be used as evidence against us.

And we was fined fifty dollars and had to pick up the garbage... in the
                      Snow.

Jeff's been adamant with his view of tapes from CDs sounding good enough - recorded and played back on relatively stock Technics (with improved record section for hotter tapes) as he demos often at the shows. However, his Technics are sure perdie!

Yes, I went through that with Rene who wrote that recent article for Wired.
If you're seeking something more sonically pure (and fussier) than vinyl, try reel-to-reel tape. And try this machine to play it on.
