It is clearly a sales program, albeit a successful one.
To be a truly valid trade in program:
1) It needs to be permanent. It's needs to be based on the value of the product, not the date on the calendar.
2) It needs to be based on real current retail used market values. That is, you need to receive in trade the same value you would get selling the product yourself.
3) Ideally the manufacturer would have a refurbishing/warranty program for the trade-ins that would allow consumers to acquire them at current retail used market values.
Of course, ymmv.
