    that is he SAYS howdy.

i have been remiss in posting here but now i will change that. i can yap for as long as anybody.

first, the music i love. mostly jazz, world, rock n roll, classical (self guided for the most part), opera hasn't bitten me yet, hip hop is for others, some pop, and other music that i take a shine to.

equipment. i started with dynaco a25s, then stacked a25s, dynaquad ambience extraction, even now (just so you BARELY can detect rear channels). i had infinity monitor jrs, LS3/5As, i own spendor s3/5s, maggie MMGs, and i still love my Fried model RIIs. i had the sub (transmission line both channels) from the Fried model H and am used to hearing IMF monitor IIIs and Fried monitor IVs so i NEED the low end.

i dearly loved the ADC XLM, and the Sonus carts, grace F9e, plus the micro-acoustics 2002e. i also love moving coil carts like my FR1mkIII, ortofon mc200 (now retired and in need of soundsmith), AT oc9, a krell, and would love to go into the upper middle of ortofon's line, and higher like the a95. i have a sota sapphire/MMT combo and had the grace 707/kd500 combo. i once had the rabco st4 tt on which the XLM sang. i also used a grado F1+ on that tt which i found to be a fantastic tracker and was quite musical.

i hear differences in wire but won't go overboard. the preamp is an ARC sp3a1 (c), amp is an adcom 555II. adcom's amps are soooo much better than their preamps although i never tried the passive one. tubes in the preamp make for a very nice sound. vinyl is preferred over all digital sources although the hi rez formats come VERY close.

well, that ought to do it for a while.

Man, you bring back memories. Those Dynaco speakers were very nice, and I too did the passive rear channel thing on and off for years- it made the system sound 3d. The ARC SP-3-a-1 was my preamp for a number of years- I had a silver black one, which was more low key than the gold/black, but the latter is really retro cool now. (I gather that the preamp can be brought up to modern listening standards, mine is long gone). Glad to have you here.

I saw a SP3A1 for sale in the front window of a local audio store two years ago (store now gone). I inquired but they wanted too much money considering it would have to be sent back to ARC and given a fine going over. But I just love the yesteryear look of the old SP3.

Was it the gold/black faceplate? I thought those looked a little 'pimp' back in the day, but now, I'm chasing cars with fins, so I'm down with retro-bling.

What did you think of the Krell cartridge? It was made by Takeda of Miyabi and has a good lineage. Dan used to import a few cartridges over the years and was curious how this one turned out. Must have been a beast to align.

                Welcome hifitommy.
Enjoyed reading about you and your system. It appears we have similar tastes in music, and I look forward to reading and learning about some new jazz vinyl albums I can consider adding to my collection.
