  • Greetings from San Diego

    Hello there.
A friend of mine rockitman told me about this forum. I think this is a little above my pay grade here but I do enjoy the hobby. I have a large music server (JRiver) running and a 1,000+ hour Grateful Dead soundboard collection. All of my digital collection is Apple Lossless. I also have jumped back into vinyl this year and have already bought 100+ new LP's! I am listening to Vinyl probably 90% of the time now. My system is mainly what would be considered mid-90's bang for the buck. Adcom GFA545 and Adcom GDA-700 DAC. McCormack Micro Line Drive Passive Pre-Amp. Mirage M7si monitors. Stax SR5 Headphones. Transparent Cable throughout. My new vinyl rig is an Audio Technica Lp1240 with an Emotiva XPS-1 pre-amp. A bunch of budget MM Cartridges (AT's mainly) and a new Denon 103 which blows the others away badly.
So thanks for the great new forum and I can watch my buddy rockitman 's discussions! PS- YES, I have heard his system in person, althought not the Airforce one TT.

    Welcome Boltman!

The beauty of this board is that we don't let "pay grade" interfere with our passion for audio and music. Everyone has an equal voice and is respected for what they contribute. We all learn from each other in some ways and the members here have all been very helpful and appreciative too.

With 1,000+ hour of Grateful Dead material, do you have opportunity to listen to something else? Haha!

Thanks. Rockitman and I go way back. We are both GD collectors. I get into moods where I need to listen to the GD for a good stretch, but otherwise I listen to just about anything. Listening to LP's has been a nice kick in the butt for me to get back into my system and the music of course.

I think there are a few other members here who live in Diego. I was there in the mid-70's, and was a co-founder of the first incarnation of the San Diego Audio Society (and if there had been a San Diego Dead Head chapter, would obviously have founded that even earlier).

Welcome Boltman !!!! Lots to learn and have fun with around here. As Johhny Vinyl alludes, this site isn't about SOTA systems. Great sound can be had at virtually any price level.
Forgot to mention...the site owner, Myles Astor is a literal encyclopedia of equipment and music knowledge. A what sounds good on vinyl master so to speak....

Did this club meet at Stereo Unlimited sometimes? I remember hearing about it or similar. Stereo Design closed it's store a few months ago. Another brick and mortar casualty. Bought all my gear there back in the day. There is a new high end place called Alma Audio in La Jolla that just opened up. Some guy named Fabio runs it. At first, I thought it might be THE Fabio...but it's not. The "Model" Fabio used to go to the high end shows back in the day out here.

The group occasionally meets there. They don't like to abuse the privilege because meetings are after store hours and a worker has to be there to lock up after the meeting. Meetings there are usually about a specific new piece of gear not necessarily sold by the store.

There is a newer store than Alma Music in La Jolla, name escapes me, selling restored vintage gear, horns, concentric driven speakers, very niche stuff. Personally not sure how anyone in this racket survives with bricks and mortar.

There are now 2 high end audio shops in La Jolla, I can't remember the name of the newest one. Alex Suify is also one of the priciples at Alma Audio (which has been around for over a year, perhaps approaching its second anniversary soon?) and well known to people here and at other high end audio Internet boards.

Stereo Unlimited didn't exist when the San Diego Audio Society started, we usually met at Audio Dimensions which was out pretty far east (not as far as Poway, though).

edit: the newer store is called Deja Vu Audio. There is also Blackbird Audio in Santee.

I stopped by Deja Vu after their soft opening. The cat that runs it is pretty cool (expat New Yorker) his uncle was a sideman in Duke Ellington's orchestra. If you like vintage this is hog heaven (Quad 57s, Western Electric repros, EMT, Horns, Vinyl) and lottsa jazz music.

What Gusf mentioned about the music is special on this site compared to most. I've been turned on to a lot of music since being here. Following the "what are you listening to now" thread has allowed me to increase my collection with new music I wouldn't have found without it.

So right Tom. I just received a mint demo copy of Flat & Scruggs at Carnegie Hall which Myles mentioned a couple of weeks ago when he took it to Harry Ws place. Really well recorded.
