Happy Thanksgiving all. As I sit here in the early morning hours on the west coast, enjoying a Cisco reissue of Dexter Gordon's "One Flight Up", it is my hope that you all have a wonderful day with friends and family.

If we boil Thanksgiving down to a day where everyone gathers with friends and family and gives thanks for whatever good fortune we have, it seems like Thanksgiving day should be universal. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

How Thanksgiving Day started in Canada and the U.S. ...and other countries that celebrate it.

Thanksgiving Day is celebrated primarily in Canada and the United States. It's a day to give thanks for the blessings of the previous year as well as the harvest. Thanksgiving was traditionally a religious and cultural celebration, but today is celebrated by many people in Canada and the U.S. regardless of their beliefs or culture. In Canada, Thanksgiving is held on the second Monday in October while in the U.S. it is held on the fourth Thursday in November. Similar holidays exist around the world in other countries and cultures, but have different names and are held on different days. The only ones likely to not enjoy a Thanksgiving feast today would be the turkeys. Ceremonies to give thanks are common in almost all religions, especially after harvests.

Don't tell the guests. Reminds me of he old Johnny Carson days when he had this celebrity on talking about his worst Thanksgivings. The celeb--whose name I can't remember--told a story about how he had put the bird to cool of on the counter and then rejoined his guests. In the interim, his dog got into the kitchen, pulled the turkey off the counter and began to eat it. Johnny goes so what did you do. The guest goes, just what Julia Childs would have done: What the guests don't know won't hurt them. Johnny quipped, well I guess they know now!
