KG did a nice job on the remaster, but he had good sounding material to work from. The SQ on most of War's records were above average for the period, the orig. 1st press of some of their records are demo quality.

One thing that I wanted to bring up is the subject of Record Store Day releases. The initial intent of Record Store Day was to bring people back to shop at record stores (unfortunately, it can't resurrect the dead). The initial RSD releases were generally schlock taken from digital and any source just to produce a record for sale. It's apparent as time has gone on that the people behind these releases came to understand that there was also a demand for quality and quantity. Some of the more recent RSD releases done by the likes of Kevin Gray and Ryan Smith have exceeded expectations (take also the Resonance Records Bill Evans RSD release) and this relatively recent War release exemplifies that. As I understand, the War release was also cut with Kevin's all new tube mastering system (one reason picked up).
I really didn't expect much given that it was a best of and after one play was gob smacked by both the sound quality and the music. I forgot War had so many hit songs. Sonically, the sound is HUGE with way above average bass and vocal quality for a rock release. The new Goldmund monoblocks really illustrate the huge stage and do nothing to hinder its presentation. My main complaint is a slight compression of the sound that I assume traces back to the original recording. The bad news. This album will set you back $80-150 with the second hand sellers.Myles B.
