Facts about The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds album

1. Throughout the album, Wilson used random objects as instruments to create the album's iconic sound including Coke cans, bicycle bells and the internal strings of a piano. The barking heard at the end of Caroline, No came from Wilson's pet dogs Banana and Louie.
2. Brian Wilson produced the Pet Sounds album when he decided to take a break from live shows in the middle of their tour. Wilson set himself to task on creating the revolutionary album and got the rest of the band to record their vocals when they returned from the road.
3. Pet Sounds was heavily inspired by The Beatles' Rubber Soul album. Wilson once said: "When I heard Rubber Soul, I said, 'That's it. That's all. That's all folks'. I said, 'I'm going to make an album that's really good, I mean really challenge me'. I mean, I love that f*****g album, I cherish that album."
4. The Beatles producer Sir George Martin said in a special edition Pet Sounds box set: "Without Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper never would have happened... Pepper was an attempt to equal Pet Sounds."
5. Wilson had intended for the instrumental of Pet Sounds to be used as a James Bond theme tune. It was originally titled Run, James, Run but it never came to be part of the 007 franchise.
6. Capitol Records did not believe in the new direction of Pet Sound and waited months to release the first single – Sloop John B finally dropped two months after the album arrived.

At least Blonde on Blonde was released on a quality label, Columbia. Pet Sounds was released on Crapitol.

Isnt it a little unusual that Pet Sounds was a mono only release, even at the late date of 1966?

A true stereophonic mix of Pet Sounds was not considered in 1966 largely because of mixing logistics.[126] In spite of whether a true stereo mix was possible, Brian intentionally mixed the final version of his recordings in mono (as did Spector). He did this because he felt that mono mastering provided more sonic control over the final result, irrespective of the vagaries of speaker placement and sound system quality. In that era radio and TV were broadcast in mono and most domestic and automotive radios and record players were monophonic.[126] Another and more personal reason for Brian's preference for mono was his almost total deafness in his right ear.[nb 20]

Pet Sounds has had many different reissues since its release in 1966, including remastered mono and stereo versions. Its first reissue was in 1972,[citation needed] when it was packaged as a bonus LP with the Beach Boys' latest album Carl and the Passions – "So Tough". The first release of the album on CD came in 1990, when it was released with the addition of three bonus tracks: "Unreleased Backgrounds",[nb 29] "Hang On to Your Ego", and "Trombone Dixie" all of which were described as unreleased.[245]

In 1997, The Pet Sounds Sessions box set was released. It included the original mono release of Pet Sounds, the very first stereo release (created by Mark Linett), and three discs of unreleased material.[246] In 2001, Pet Sounds was re-released with the mono and improved stereo versions, plus "Hang on to Your Ego" as a bonus track, all on one disc.[246][247] On August 29, 2006, Capitol released a 40th Anniversary edition, containing a new 2006 remaster of the original mono mix, DVD mixes (stereo and Surround Sound), and a "making of" documentary.[191] The discs were released in a regular jewel box and a deluxe edition was released in a green fuzzy box. A two disk colored gatefold vinyl set was released with green (stereo) and yellow (mono) disks.[citation needed] In 2016, a 50th anniversary edition box set presents the remastered album in both stereo and mono forms alongside studio sessions outtakes, alternate mixes and previously unreleased live recordings, amounting to over 100 tracks.[248]

I think Brian was the main reason as other albums had been coming out in stereo for years already by 1966.
