  • The Best New Artists Music Thread

I didn't know where quite to place this thread so thought here would be the best place for the time being.

This thread, as opposed to "what are you listening to tonight," is for members to post what new or up and coming artists they are making the rounds in their system and they want to share with other members of audionirvana. Doesn't matter if it's digital or analog, as long as it's music. So please post away! (But it might be helpful to indicate the medium.)

Some of my recent favorites in no particular order. (All on vinyl expect for Steph Johnson)

    Parker Milsap
    Lake Street Dive
    Margo Price
    Rhiannon Giddens
Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings
    Steph Johnson
    Sturgill Simpson

Sorry for all the "New Country" but I'm learning to appreciate it. (Parker, Margo, Sturgill)

P.S. If you like Lake Street Dive, Rachael Price has a few solo albums available as well.

3 artists I really like now. I don't know how new they are to everyone here as they each have a few albums out already, but here goes:

    Liz Longley.
Great vocals, and her songs are intense. No sappy love songs here. Liz sings about rape, alzheimers disease, etc. Wonderful singer/songwriter recommended by Mike B on AS:

    Kimbra:
The female artist on Gotye's Somebody I Used to Know. Her studio albums might be over produced, but her live sessions are amazing. Compare these two videos:

    Video from the studio album:

Video from a taping at a radio station. Love this one so much more!

    Rupa & The April Fishes:
I believe inspired by Pink Martini and their multi-cultural music. Rupa Marya is a medical doctor but moonlights as the lead singer for Rupa & The April Fishes. Less polished but more accessible (and perhaps more fun) than Pink Martini, Rupa also sings in multiple languages. Highly recommended for those into multicultural music.

Rupa & The April Fishes has a striking similarity to Klezmer, in fact she is singing Ladino..

Ladino? Goes to show what I know. I thought she was singing in Spanish (and French).

Looked at the stuff she did in 2014 when she was 16. Wow. And she writes her own stuff on top of it. Can only hope she isn't mismanaged and burns out before she turns twenty. I here a bit of Amy Winehouse as an influence in the vocal phrasing and would say I hope in time she develops more her own voice/style.

I was looking at the Hollie Stephenson video and was wondering how much those pop filters/windscreeens degrade the sound??? Is this a case of the cure being worse than the disease?

Well, thanks to Rupa Myra of Rupa & The April Fishes, Happy Birthday is now in the public domain! (who thought it wasn't already?!):

Now you can sing 'Happy Birthday' in public and not have to pay a licensing fee. A judge approved a settlement agreement on Monday, ending the long-running copyright dispute.

I'm not sure if these guys qualify as "new artists" since they've been around for more than a decade, but I'm quite taken with the band Spoon. Very catchy rock and roll. If you're looking for one album to get, try GaGaGaGA.
