Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

I remember buying this video on laserdisc in the mid 90's. It was mastered on early analog high definition TV and digital sound. Very high tech for its day. Still have the LD. IIRC, The recording date was 1991.
( The pcm on the laserdisc sounds better than youtube, but you get the point). While I like Reiner Chicago, Solti Chicago was pretty damn good too.

The first chair players in this recording were pretty much the same principals as in the Reiner version of 20 years before as well. Reiner remains my definitive reading although Solti was a fantastic conductor and one of my faves.

Yeah, I have the Reiner RCA/Classic LP and its better performance and sound, but it sure is nice to get to be able to see them too. The Solti only sounds pretty good if you play it LOUD. While the Reiner sounds great at any volume you choose. Damn early digital recording.

For a very different Pictures, try to find Columbia ML5600, a live recording of the great Sviatoslav Richter playing the original piano version of Pictures at a live concert from 1958 (IIRC) recorded in Sofia, Bugaria. The performance is absolutely amazing. Sound is not great and the audience coughs a lot, but the playing is magical. One of my favorite recordings. (BTW, learning the piano version Pictures has been on my bucket list for a very long time - I'm currently doing that - although very slowly. After playing the first three promenades and the Gnomes and Old Castle, I've jumped to the very end, and am learning the "Great Gate of Kiev". Some of the stuff in the middle is extremely hard and I probably will never play those :-( .

Ive heard a piano version on Mercury I think, not Columbia though. Congrats on learning to play a good portion of it yourself.

! Learning Pictures original piano version? You must be very good. I heard in Munich Philharmonie Hall a while back Vladamir Ashkenazy play Pictures to a packed house. Very good performance too.

Oh. So same players essentially but close to 35 years after the Reiner.

same basic players and music, but different time, conductor, hall, and presence of audience. I believe it was recorded in Japan, so different country too.

Hard to argue with the Reiner either musically or sonically.

I have several recordings of Pictures, as it's been a favorite of mine since I first heard it in high school. Always preferred the original piano version to the Ravel orchestration, though I like both. Over the past few years I've tended towards the Byron Janus release from 1961 on Mercury. I don't think it was ever released on LP (that's what the notes said in the CD), but it is available on CD and SACD, though I haven't found the SACD yet.
