  • RIP Marni Nixon!

Ms. Nixon was the ghost singer for actresses in many of Hollywood’s most famous musicals, from “The King and I” to “West Side Story” to “My Fair Lady.”

Yes, very sad. I loved her vocal performance in My Fair Lady.

She was very special. Reference Recordings released two albums, Marni Nixon sings Gershwin (which was a TAS Super Disc) and Marni Nixon sings Kern. It was ironic that Audrey Hepburn was cast in My Fair Lady, instead of Julie Andrews, who starred on Broadway. If they had cast Andrews, there would not have been the need to dub. However, the following year, when Andrews was cast in Sound of Music (instead of Mary Martin who did the role on Broadway), the producers had Marni Nixon play the part of one of the nuns, a singing role, albeit a small one. It is quite impressive to see the major roles that Marni Nixon sang/dubbed - including Anna for Deborah Kerr in the King and I, Maria for Natalie Wood in West Side Story, and Eliza for Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, all three of which were nominated for (and two - WSS and MFL won) academy awards for best picture of the year! Also Sound of Music, where she had a real role, also won best picture of the year.
