The Beethoven Moonlight Sonata is one of the most well-known pieces of piano music. Gloomy and deep, it's testament to Beethoven's genius.

        - Violon sonatas

A late bloomer, the Beethoven that we all celebrate began with his third symphony. The composers who followed throughout the nineteenth century looked over their shoulders at the towering figure for his middle period. Brahms used his own version of the Ode to Joy in his first symphony which took him forever to complete in fear of not escaping from the shadow of Beethoven. Bruckner composed Symphony no 0 for fear of dying after 9 as did Beethoven and Schubert. He died before his ninth symphony was completed which would have been his tenth had he not numbered the first one zero. Fate's fickle finger. Stravinsky most admired beethoven's late string quartets which looked forward 50 years into the future. Beethoven's Grosse Fugue, a very late work, is so discordant historians don't know whether to credit him with an eye to the 20th century or if he was suffering from dimentia and hearing loss. A towering figure for sure whose influence was most felt during the nineteenth century. It was Wagners Tristan and the German sixth harmony which had an enormous influence on the next 60 years of Berg, Schoenberg and the twentieth century composers before WWII.

Thanks Tima. I love the late quartets and I am partial to the even number symphonies which are more classical in nature than the odd numbers.

The Emperor is very special. Try B's 4th PC with Gould - that one is special too.

One of my favorite is Moravec--one of my favorite pianists-performing Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata on Connoisseur Society. Great playing and sound!

Complete Piano Sonatas. Just a guy in a room with a piano. Very straightforward. Very nice.
Its hard to find the performer you like across enough of these. Picking piece by piece can drive you nuts. I do that too.
