  • Heads up...

    Dear Customer,

We regret to inform you of a defective run of LPs for the Analogue Productions reissues of Witches' Brew/Gibson/New Symphony Orchestra of London (AAPC 2225) and Gounod: Faust - Ballet Music - Bizet: Carmen Suite/Gibson/ROHO (AAPC 2449). After further review of these LPs, we are not satisfied with their audio quality and have decided to again remaster them and to then re-distribute both of these products.

While we're certainly disappointed to have reached this point, we remain committed to an unmatched standard of excellence. We want Analogue Productions to remain the highest-quality reissue label.

Plans for the remastering of these titles and their subsequent re-pressing and re-distribution are still being formed. We will share more details as they are available, but please rest assured that you will receive a replacement disc should you have purchased one or both of the first run of these Analogue Productions LPs.

We very much appreciate your patience as we work to bring you the finest possible versions of these two outstanding records.

    Sincerely,

    Chad Kassem
    Analogue Productions

Thanks Rob. What do I know? I thought they both sounded pretty good. Last weekend compared them to the Classic and original (WB) and the Classic (Gounod) at a friend's place. There wasn't anything that I heard that said awful so I am wondering what happened. Or maybe something happened after a certain pressing number? Or maybe an issue with the B-sides since haven't played either of them yet? My albums are early numbers #100 off the press.

I also didn't notice anything amiss with these and after reading a review of the Faust on Chad's site that described the issue I went back and listened again.

      Still didn't hear it.

Also, I'm a subscriber and didn't get the email described above.

Well you're not alone Ian. I didn't get the email either.

But from what the person said on Chad's site, the issue is on side 2 and I didn't get that far.

Thing is, I heard that sort of stuff occasionally but write that off to the tape. You can hear some speed instability on
The Tape Project's reissue of Bill Evans' Waltz for Debby too. That's where the tape is beginning to show its age.

            Nice.

I received this the other day (a few days after complaining about the issue):

            Dear Customer,

We're sorry to announce the need to re-cut and re-press our recent
Analogue Productions 33 1/3 LP reissue of Kenny Burrell/Bluesey Burrell
(APRJ 29). We've noted a defect in side one of the record.

We're disappointed not to have caught and rectified this defect prior to
releasing the initial batch of this LP, but we're committed to "making
it right" now. Those people who've purchased this record will receive a
replacement copy (vinyl only; please retain your jacket) free of charge
as soon as we have them available.

While we'll work to correct this issue as quickly as possible, we're
unsure as of now of an exact timeline for re-cutting and re-pressing.
Please stay tuned to acousticsounds.com as we'll post a street date
on the product page for this title once we have one to share.

Thank you sincerely for your patience and understanding. We appreciate
your business, and we remain committed to upholding the highest standard
of excellence for the Analogue Productions reissue label.

Yes I got that too. Chad is certainly standing behind this product but somewhere, someone most likely didn't listen to the test pressing before approving. I have only played the Coltrane so don't know what the issue with the Burrell is. Have you played yours Ian? I still have my 45 rpm Burrell reissue around to play in the interim.

Just put side one of Bluesy Burrell on. The left channel is noisy as all get out. It reminds of the same sound that happened years ago with the early RCM equipped with teflon lips that trapped dirt between the LP and vacuum slot and gouged and damaged the records. I wonder if a piece of plastic wasn't sucked off the lacquer as it was being cut, became trapped and gouged the left channel? Otherwise it's an amazing sounding LP.

Side 2 seems okay except for a little crackling between cuts 1 and 2 in the right channel. But I was also distracted texting a note.

Kudos to Chad for addressing the issue. I wonder if he has dedicated presses for Analogue Productions?

Also makes me curious what quality control is standard practice in the record business - or is there any? Sure, some test pressings at the outset, but does anyone do something like checking every Nth pressing?

                        and thanks, Rob, for posting.

Not to my knowledge. I have had conversations with Chad where he told me had to turn down business from outside clients because the size of their runs (say 100K copies) would prevent him pressing his own releases.

Great question. I'm sure there are many Q/C steps but this wasn't a pressing but a mastering defect as far as I can tell.
