  • Coming Soon: MOFI UD1-S LP Limited Edition Pressings

Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs just can't stay still. They're always looking into how they can improve an aspect of their products, or their users end experience, or curating some of the very best analog, and digital equipment on the planet to distribute in North America. AXPONA saw the company highlighting their new UltraDisc One-Step (UD1S)…

Between these and Chads new UHQRs, there will be too many $100 LPs coming out soon. Especially if the vinyl is not as quiet as the old jvc super vinyl. I don't want deluxe boxes, I want superb sound at reasonable prices in normal packaging. I'm not saying they shouldn't offer these products but I hope they don't forget about basic reissues with top notch sound either.

IMHO, QRP's current standard pressings easily eclipse any record I've owned on JVC Super vinyl, and I've owned hundreds of them.

I'm all for new innovations when it results in improved product quality and I truly hope this is the case with these UD1-S pressings, but price points are starting to become unattainable for me. I've already reduced my new vinyl purchases somewhat, partly due to the Canadian dollar having dropped significantly, and I don't really need another hurdle standing in my way, despite the suggested quality improvements. Did you notice the comment about the 45RPM of I Robot being noisy? Will this see itself occurring on the premium releases?

I heard a pressing of this last year. Blew me away at the time but at $100 I am going to ponder for a bit! I will. Real down and get it eventually though.

        I will be ordering it.

I know these new albums are pricey but they definitely offer the promise of far better sound than the standard issue LP. If you've ever been lucky enough to hear a lacquer, you can understand the amount of information lost. Of course, the question is whether the information loss is generational or from the plating process itself.

FYI, I think Gale Records did the same thing for their albums.

It's a pretty good sounding album. Greg had the tape and lent to me a while back. Tape was very good for a rock recording.

Water Lily did one step plating on their releases 25+ years ago. some of those were damn fine sounding records with great East Indian and Brazilian artist. as you know, the entire recording chain to disc cutting used toobs and Tim De Paravincini gear to boot.

Myles, cant you use your influence to get Kavi to release 15 ips dupes?

I actually talked to Kavi a while back about getting copies of one or two of his recordings for review purposes, especially the Martin Simpson/Wu Mann recording. The CD is terrific so imagine what the tape sounds like! Anyway, Kavi sold his tape machine and no longer has the tape machine to play his tapes back. As you remember, Chad did reissue one of his recordings on LP a couple of years ago so that make you suspect he has or has access to a machine to play Kavi's tapes back. That said, as much as you and I and a few others like some of the Water Lily recordings, they would never be big sellers.

That might be a great project for Ki though!

are you inferring Kavi's tape deck had some special eq curve? whoever did the Ry Cooder/VM Bhatt re-master for Chad could say for sure.

I heard that the early recordings were done with the MR70. After that Kavi went to the TdP modded C37 that was a two track-one inch machine. Not many of them laying around. I'm not at one recording Kavi then switched to the Stellavox. Maybe when he dd the Russia recordings??? Sheer guessing.

From the TNT interview: "I had always wanted an all tube chain. When I started Water Lily, I was loaned the superb Nagra T Audio tape recorder by the manufacturer. When funds allowed I moved on to the nuvistor based Ampex MR70, of which I had both 1/4" and 1/2" decks. Tim de Paravicini of EAR, built me a pair of tube microphones, a tube mike preamp and heavily modified a tube Studer C37, converting it to a one inch, two track deck. This was my recording chain till 2003. In 2003, I sold off all my EAR equipment and purchased two Tascam DSD recorders, two Stellavox analog tape recorders (1/4 and 1/2 inch), a SoundDevices PCM recorder, Meitner DA/AD converters and Pearl ELM 8 and C mics. Mic preamps are by TrueSystems and Grace."
