  • "AAA" albums will become extinct shortly

It seems to me that it is inevitable that all analog "AAA" LPs will become extinct in the not so distant future. Analog tape archives are getting old, they are fragile, and it seems the studios don't want to master LPs over and over again using the original analog tapes. Hence the making and use of hi resolution digital intermediate dubs for distribution and cutting that is becoming more and more common even for an analog format like LP. Hold on to all your AAA LPs, they could become true collectors items one day .

The studios just need to make new safety copies of their master tapes and we are good to go for another 50 years.

As long as there is high end audio, I'm sure AAA vinyl will exist. It could shrink, but it'll exist.

analog or digital safety copies? either way, its another generation down, more loss of information from the original analog master tapes.

Yes, but it could become only a small niche, like direct to disc Lps are today.

                1. There is very little generational loss nowadays with the improved electronics and parts in modern tape machines. Certainly not hiss and I think Bruce can attest to that.
                2. It isn't so much the record labels releasing their tapes as it is to whom. They won't ship the tapes very far from the storage vaults.
                3. Most of the records you play are a couple of generations down from the working master to begin with. Only Decca and Mercury to my knowledge among the classical labels actually cut from the working masters. Others like RCA and Mercury used a two track mixdown from the working master. So as Mark said, those two track masters can be easily recreated.
                4. Also as long as the metal work still exists, records can be stamped. Chad for instance, has a lot of the Classic metalwork and could if the master tape was damaged, use the parts to press the album.

So I think it's a little premature to be gloom and doom yet.

Analog of course. Go back and look at the whole AAA chain from beginning to end. Making a safety copy from the tape called the master is the least of our concerns.
