  • Never Seen Before Ohm Acoustics LP

Thanks to Harry Weisfeld for this one! Never seen this album before that includes cuts from several M&K Recordings. Probably taken from the back-up safety analog tape (like the M&K) sampler LP but the For Duke and Ed Graham cuts sounded quite good and the album can be had online for less than an arm and leg. Ordered one for myself yesterday and am awaiting delivery.

So mine arrived this weekend. It's interesting and sounds pretty good, as good as most "audiophile" compilations. Maybe a good demo disc but probably not something I would pull out again unless I wanted to show off my system to a non-believer.

I might be a little more enthusiastic about it! I love Leroy Anderson "Typewriter" cut and the Mercury recording Music of Leroy Anderson is a long time fave.

The Chandos Anthems-excerpt Handel is also very good but I'm a sucker for this type of music that can also be found on some Musical Heritage Society albums as well as my long time fave Bach's Quodlibet on Telefunken.

The M&K cuts are good including the "Llorna" track from the fabled and ultra pricey Flamenco Fever. At the same time, the Ohm Acoustics "Demo" record also reminds me why I don't care for the M&K D2Ds as much as many other audiophiles. Outside of few, the live recording Flamenco Fever being again an exception to the rule, the M&K D2Ds were recorded very dry (as were many jazz albums but in this case, most had some reverb added in mastering). M&K's thought was though to have the audiophile's room provide the missing ambience. I just don't think it works and it annoys me. This dryness obviously doesn't obviously bother others.

Curiously, I find many of the D2D albums were recorded very dry. Most of the Crystal Clears including my favorite Laurindo Almeida. Perhaps the two best (or is it worst?) examples are the Leinsdorf Sheffield D2D classical discs. Drier than the Sahara desert. In the end, it just seems to rob the recordings of a little bit of liveliness and delicacy. Makes them a touch boring sounding. If you want to hear a D2D with plenty of ambience and delicacy, pick up a copy of the Cardas D2D recording of Kip Dobler. Now that's what a guitar sounds like. Same goes for the various percussion instruments on the recording.
