How about rock musicians who were hits with two groups?

I'll throw out a few that come to mind immediately.

Jimmy Page with the Yardbirds and Led Zepellin

Dave Grohl with Nirvana and The Foo Fighters

Eric Clapton with the Yardbirds and Cream (I think you could also add John Mayall's band too here)

Paul McCartney with the Beatles and Wings

We need to define "hits" (what degree of popularity) and "groups" (as opposed to a group and then just going solo)?

were all in at least two "major " groups and had solo careers as well. Obviously there are many many more. Then there are others, like Richard Thompson or John Lennon, who went from their first and only major group stardom directly to a solo career without any more true "group" participation.

To open things up a little, how about something like Randy Meisner, a founding member of Poco who then quit them to become a founding member of Eagles, and Timothy B Schmit, who took his position in each of those groups! And during the Eagles hiatus, Schmit was in Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band for several years and is credited with coining the term "Parrotheads"

In a less popular genre, Mike Portnoy came to "stardom" in Dream Theater, and is now in 3 bands concurrently, all with Neal Morse (himself a founding member of Spock's Beard); Transatlantic, Flying Colors, and the Neal Morse Band.

Bernie Sumner had hits with three bands: Joy Division, New Order and Electronic which featured Marr of The Smiths, Tennant and Lowe of Pet Shop Boys and Kraftwerk's Bartos.

I take it Jazz is not included since everybody played with practically everybody?
