  • Santo & Johnny Sleepwalk - Anyone ever seen this Fender?

I'm a big fan of the late 50s music - doo wop, soul, pop, etc. Came across this video of Santo & Johnny doing their famous "Sleepwalk" on the Dick Clark show from the 50s. I've never seen any artist use this type of Fender on the keyboard stand. Never even knew this existed. I assumed the riff melody was on a Fender Strat like all the other artists used in that day - Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, etc. Anyone know what this is or ever seen it before? Also, enjoy the music!

I'm not sure if you are asking about the type of instrument, generally or the specific model. The latter- dunno-- generally, steel guitar, console as opposed to lap style. Similar in sound to Hawaiian guitar. Pedal style similar to console type, but with levers/pedals to change tuning. Sho-Bud, who was famous for the latter, had a factory right above Roberts Western--a great club--on Broad in Nashville.
    Cool song, right?
PS: If you want to hear some insane playing, check out Speedy West!

Nice! Thanks for the info. The cool surf rock of the 50s/60s was great stuff.
