  • I can make a Top 2 list, but not a Top 5 or Top 10.

No matter what audio/music forum one participates in we are always asked to name our Top 5 or Top 10 albums. Like most, I've been fairly consistent with my answers, but it's not always the same. I personally cannot come up with an absolute Top 5 or 10 list that never changes. I'm a huge fan of Alan Parsons, Pink Floyd, Supertramp, Genesis, Harmonium and a few others, and they each have multiple albums that I am loathe to select as my personal favourite. Don't ask me to choose between Floyd's DSOTM and WYWH or Supertramp's COTC and C?WC? as there are many days I prefer one over the other.

But there are 2 albums I've selected each and every time for inclusion on a Top 5 and/or Top 10 list, and neither are Progressive Rock. One could surmise therefore that they are my Top 2 favourite albums. They are:

Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
Rickie Lee Jones - Rickie Lee Jones

Does your Top 5 or Top 10 change? Are there any albums that are constant? Are they all constant?

I normally don't respond to requests to name my top 5 or 10 albums because it's simply too hard to boil down a list that small. I do have to say that my UHQR of Supertramp's Crime of the Century sounded really good last night.

Nice. Maybe one day! I'm good though with my Speakers Corner reissue until then(?).

All the time. Sometimes it's for the sound and sometimes it's for the music. Interestingly that pertains more to rock than to jazz or classical where the two come together more often than not. Or another way of looking at it is that it's a real bonus when it's great sound and music wrapped up in one package.

Then of course, some music speaks to me more at times than others.Or the mood I'm in. Is it hard rock. Soft rock. Glam rock. Prog rock. Grunge. Or brings back pleasant or even not so pleasant memories.

For instance my five favorite rock bands tonight might be:

          Donovan
          The Rolling Stones
          Nirvana
          Bob Dylan
          Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young

Last night it might have been:

          Neil Young
          The Beatles
          The Who
          Yes
          David Bowie

There's that old sentimentality creeping in!
