  • Summer plans for live music?

Anyone else have tickets for concerts, or seen any good shows this summer? My wife and I have a nice summer planned. Already did the blues festival in Maryland. Have tickets for Wynton Marsalis, Lyle Lovett & his large band, Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck all coming up at the Wolf trap in Va. Anyone else I should try and make that are coming to DC-Maryland-VA area?

This is often easy for us- literally a mile or so down the road to a local club- Los Straightjackets in a week or so, James Hunter and Bill Kirchen after that; can't remember what else is local to us in NY this summer; will travel for music. Buddy Guy is fabulous.

Have not seen Buddy Guy in around 20 years. He was old then. Can't wait!

I saw Buddy Guy at Bottlerock in Napa in May for the first time - he put on a great show. I'd say he is the greatest living blues guitarist.

We also have tickets for Kraftwerk on 9/3 in MD. Looking forward to that one.

So, we heard Los Straightjackets last night- probably the 4th time we've gone to see them. They were in rare form, but their playing skill is so high, they can make it look silly. They did that old big band standard, Louis Prima's "Sing,Sing,Sing" as a psych-surf rock song, did Bus Stop by the Hollies in surf mode, even the theme from Titanic. These guys are actually session dudes from Nashville who wear Mexican wrestling masks, and only the leader speaks: in fake Spanish. The did an hour first set, came back for a 1/2 hour second set, and did an encore. It sounds like it's novelty stuff, but these guys can wring out hard-driving old fashioned rock and roll with two guitars, bass and drums. Their 'schtick" is funny- they are almost like a Mexican "Blue Man Group" except it isn't just weird antics, they play their asses off. I've heard some pretty serious players (not just the famous names, but guys who are musician's musicians) and last nights' show ranked in the top tier musically. Of course, you have to like rock and roll. The rest is gravy.

So far I saw Bonnie Raitt in April, the Who in May, was at Bottlerock in Napa Memorial Day weekend and saw Stevie Wonder, Ziggy Marley, Buddy Guy, Florence and the Machine and a number of other bands, and saw Paul Simon in June. Today we're going to a local Blues and Brews Festival and there will be a number of other local Art and Wine Fairs in the next couple of months with good cover bands playing (Beatles, Stones, Santana, Tom Petty etc.). I love this time of year.

Just got tickets for the Mick Fleetwood Blues Band playing all the Peter Green era blues music at Uptown in Napa on 9/25. Songs like Black Magic Woman, Oh Well, Rattlesnake Shake, etc. Some of my favorite early Fleetwood Mac music. And my wife doesn't mind going even though it's our anniversery (I'm taking her away to Lake Tahoe the weekend before).

And last night I scored buffet dinner tickets at Wente Vinyards on Travelzoo for 40% off to see Boz Scaggs and Robert Cray next Thursday. I'm also thinking of getting tickets for Bad Company (looks like 3 of the originals including Paul Rogers are there) for Labor Day Weekend at the Ironstone Winery.

We're planning on fulfilling a bucket list item, attending the Marriage of Figaro at Glyndebourne in August. I'll be bringing my tux to London for the occasion. Also a couple of concerts at the Proms. Unfortunately, a family wedding in Rome in late August means we missed our annual classical music binge in London in May and June.
