  • Lacquers on eBay

I think there are quite a few of us scouring the used LP bins in B&M stores or online. Every now and then I see lacquers being offered up on eBay. What are people's thoughts on purchasing lacquers? I guess that's the best quality you can get, but I hear the life span is fairly short? If so, how short? Would you buy a lacquer?

    Any thoughts?

You'd be lucky to get four plays out of a lacquer but they do sound good. Not to mention they degrade just sitting there. No playing necessary. That's why you want to plate ASAP after cutting and why several places now have the mastering and plating facilities in one plant. No overnighting the lacquer for plating.

What I would do? Play the LP and transfer it right away to 15 ips tape. Yes, seeing those CR lacquers makes me crazy but mostly because they had all these Contemporary recordings ready to go and went out of business before they could be released.

I once had a defective lacquer Reiner Scheherazade lacquer from when Chesky was doing the RCAs. Great sound, as you said, closer in sound to the tape than the LP. But it got noisy real quick.

I think once and a while, Ying Tan brings a lacquer or two for demo purposes to shows.

Thx, Myles. I'll stay away from lacquers then. Four plays only. Ouch!
