From Acoustic Sounds:
Sadly, another noteworthy contributor to the world of audio recording and engineering has left us. Sherwood “Burt” Sax died at his home north of Reno, Nevada, Sept. 20. He was nearing his 90th birthday.
On Dec. 27, 1967, Burt's brother, Doug Sax, opened the doors to The Mastering Lab — Hollywood — the first independent LP mastering facility in the world. The Mastering Lab utilized custom electronics and a mastering console designed by Burt. This peerless equipment earned The Mastering Lab more Grammy nominations for engineering than any other mastering facility. Burt Sax also was involved with customizing microphones used by Sheffield Lab Recordings and he also built custom monoblock amplifiers for Doug that are still in use.
Doug Sax died at age 78 in April 2015. The Mastering Lab and its custom electronic gear, designed by Burt Sax, were sold to Chad Kassem and relocated to Acoustic Sounds headquarters here in Salina, Kansas.
