Its cultural as well. English speakers in Asian refer to audio gear as "gears" and also say "vinyls."

This a hipster thang. I'm ok with them calling their records "vinyls." Chances are, I won't be in the Black Keys and Arcade Fire section anyway. And no, my record didn't come with a download card. When it was made, computers ran on punch-cards. So fuck off.

all I remember about punch cards is I took a computer science course in the seventies. I wrote a program and had it put on punch cards. turned in the punch cards to have it run on the mainframe. it crashed. that's my total memory of punch cards.

My ex- took a Fortran course in '78 and the professor rejected her final project. Reason why? Her stack of cards was only 2 inches high and her prof indicated with his fingers it should have been 3 inches tall.

Story number two. When I was a professor, Columbia missed a payroll because someone had inserted the punch cards into the computer before leaving to go home and came in the next morning to find the computer had spit out all the cards and they were just laying in a pile on the floor.

Larry - this isn't a britishism, though. I think it came from kids who grew up in a CD/download world and then discovered that farm to table lumbersexual bespoke thing includes vegan popsicles, old Schwinn bikes (not a Stingray, which is kind of aggressive, but the "girls' bike with basket for guys- way more practical) and, wait for it-----VINYLS, DUDE! Like when I'm at the barber getting my mustache waxed, we listened to some vinyls.

I just wish people could go back to say LP and LPs ... or maybe we should start to refer to digital discs as aluminiumpolycarbonates? (Or whatever they are made of.)

I prefer to refer to them as Lps also. But the correct spelling is Lp, not LP. Just ask Columbia, the inventor of the Lp. I never use the term vinyls.

Why do music labels -- even new ones -- still call themselves record labels when all they sell are CDs? Same with Tower at the end. Should have been renamed Tower CDs.

I still like to call them records.

records is a more generic term. records can be 7,10,or12 inch 33 or 45 rpm. Lps on the other hand are 12 inch 33 rpm

Any vinyl, regardless of size or speed, is a record.

You gotta come record shopping with me in Williamsburg Brooklyn or Austin. Waterloo in Austin is next to 24- the diner, not the TV show. Many folks in there are holding vinyl--I'm like "Dude, whadjubuy?" Mostly younger people- but then again, they are all younger than me, almost. Great ink though, I don't have any tattoos, Austin is tattoo crazy.

I don't care how it's pronounced in the plural by people. I don't care if they say, Lp's, Vinyls, or records. I really don't care what section they are buying the Lps in. (I hit every section) I don't care if the record came with a free download. (wish they all did) I just hope the growth of both new and reissues on vinyl continues.
That said, the original article JC posted is insane.
