  • Korean vinyl pressings.

Many years ago I came across a bin of records just outside a high-end music store and started rummaging through them. They were all priced at $1 apiece and appeared to be almost unplayed. I grabbed about 6-8 of them and noticed they were all pressed in Korea. I'd never seen Korean pressings in the wild before so I had no idea what the quality of the vinyl and/or the mastering would be like. Anyway, I got home and I was impressed after the first few LP's I played. They sounded close to Japanese pressings, but not as edgy. More like a middle-ground between US/CAN and Japanese product.

There are almost no references to Korean pressings on Discogs and they aren't brought up on other fora either, which kind of surprises me as these are of really good quality. You'd think they'd get more traction. Oh well!

    Thought I'd mention it!

Doubt many ever made their way to N. America. See them on eBay though.

There are some Italian and French prog albums reissued on vinyl in Korea. Probably sourced from CD. Meh.

That's the issue with many old and new overseas pressings. What was the source? I once picked up by accident a Phillipine Impulse pressing and it was terrible.

I was stationed in S. Korea for about a year and a half. I was doing more medical training and had lots of time to scour the city of Seoul for LP's. This was around '90. I came back with about 300 pressings! Most are really really good. Everything was mainstream consisting of mostly Rock/Pop/Jazz

I didn't find the Japanese releases of the RCA Living Stereo classical recordings thin in the bass. In fact, maybe the opposite. But they had a wonky EQ. I got rid of them years ago.

what vintage were they? Japanese pop/rock pressings from the 60's and 70's typically lack bass compared to us and uk pressings

Based on the ones I have I'd say no.
