  • Penny Lane - and other melancholia...

Listening to the 24 bit "MQS" reissue of the Beatles 1, and realized, no matter how much I love the song Penny Lane, it always leaves feeling a deep sense of melancholy. Everything about the song, the reminiscences, the tune, the instrumentation. Anyone else feel this way about it?

Any songs that leave you feeling this way?

    Two immediately come to mind:

    Sad Lisa by Cat Stevens

    Landslide by Fleetwood Mac

And the award for downright, country depressing goes to:

    Deliah by Johnny Cash

Think it says a lot about the musicians to be able to evoke such as deep feeling.

Cash's Delia is a great song. Totally different song but the same name, "Delia" off of David Johansen and the Harry Smiths is pretty dark in that way too.

    Tindersticks "Hey Lucinda" .

A posthumous duet with singer Lhasa de Sale. Her bit recorded just before she died at a young age. Fabulous recording too. Riveting stuff, not morbid ,not shmaltzy just leaving the listener empty and sad, yearning for the better times.

    Van Morrison. "Coney Island"

Al Stewart. "End of the day"

Penny Lane has never sounded like melancholia to me. I just sounds nostalgic. As Paul and John said "It was just reliving childhood.”

For melancholia how about The Animals - House of the Rising Sun.

The McGarrigle sisters "Talk to Me of Mendocino" from their first album is one of the most emotional songs I have in my collection, and leaves me practically in tears when I play it, but it doesn't evoke that sense of melancholy that Penny Lane does.

How about Bruce's Born in the USA that Reagan misinterpreted? Pretty sad song about how we treated our Vietnam War vets. (Another Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds! )

No I'm not sure. For whatever reason I connect melancholy with just the slightest hint of wistfulness. It's a sadness connected with a certain kind of longing. Not textbook I know, but it's why I put The End into a different category. Now Penny Lane, that's wistful.

Yeah when you are down and listen to this, you become even more depressed and teary eyed. What a sad song. Maybe becaue we have all gone through this and can relate? Maybe because it's part of human nature to go through that optimistic/idealistic phase but few ever achieve their dreams and goals in life.
