  • Random Album Pulls

Little different theme than the "What Are You Listening to Tonight" thread.

Post some records/CDs/music that you randomly pulled off your racks or shelves that you haven't listened to in years here! How about a minimum of five years since you last played this album?

I brought the album over to VPIs today and we played it back through the KEF Blade 1s driven by Odyssey amps, VPI's new, Mike Bettinger designed combo pre-amp and phono section, VPI Titan supertable, new VPI Fat Boy 12-inch 3D dual pivot arm and new $3500 Grado Statement V2 cartridge. Blew people's socks off. It's a no brainer considering you can probably find it for under $10! Man these guys can play! 1963! Wait til you hear the sound of the audience applauding in Carnegie Hall. Oh and the new Grado sounded very nice!

John Cocuzzi Quintet - Swingin' And Burnin'
    Mapleshade CD
Would like to hear the vibes, and clarinet on this recording from tape. Maybe Johnathan H. will find this one worthy of a Direct Tape Copy from the Mapleshade masters.

Was inspired after hearing the BSO perform perform Shostakovich's Symphony #7 (Leningrad) Tuesday night at Carnegie Hall to pull this old timer and one that I haven't heard in ages off the shelf. What a powerful piece as his last three symphonies were want to be! Great sound too. Know some have claimed that EMI limited the dynamic range of their records to 40 dB. Not here for sure. Some gain riding but it would be impossible to record a huge orchestral piece like this without a little help. And yes it's depressing especially the first movement. A hard EMI to find for sure.

Myles, was Andris Nelsons conducting the BSO? I'd love to hear how he is doing with them. We were very impressed when he conducted the Vienna Philharmonic in two concerts in Berkeley a few years ago, just before he started with the BSO.

This record done in 1979 was EMI ASD-3911 in case people want to look for it. Also the first pressings had the little colored dog in the postage stamp (ER4) label, not the big dog label (ER5). Alto did a fine reissue, also hard to find - which was three sides. They used the big dog label on the records. Both were TAS Superdiscs, so that may partly explain the hard to find status. Many of the great Andre Previn LSO recordings on EMI were engineered by Christopher Parker. This was one of them. The producer was Suvi Raj Grubb. Most of the Previn recordings were produced by Christopher Bishop, hence you often hear about the two Christopher records - but Bishop left EMI in 1979 before this recording was done.

Oops forgot that. Yes mine is an ER4 not the last of the EMI labels. The Alto reissue is around for $100-150.

Eastwind was the label in Japan the released them. Nautilus was the US distributor, that's were their sticker came from. "The Three" with Joe Sample Shelly Manne and Ray Brown is another special D2D on Eastwind as was the "The Great Jazz Trio Direct from LA"

I was on an old music binge on Sunday. Crazy mix of genres

It started with Beautiful Vision by Van the Man. Love the song Cleaning Windows. Great Album.

Followed this with my favorite album from my rookie year at college. Awesome title Ian Hunter's You're Never Alone with A Schizophrenic
Style Council's My Ever Changing Moods(nice mix of pop, jazz and soul)
Nanci Griffith's Last of The True Believer's
Ryan Adams's Live at Carnegie Hall(3 years since played)
A large number from my current rotation & finally
Windam Hills Live to mellow out for the evening Click image for larger version Name:	Van Morrison.jpg Views:	1 Size:	79.1 KB ID:	46768

a tape dupe must exist because Ying reissued "Just Friends" in 45 rpm on Groove Note. The sonics are excellent on the CJ D2D but the Eastwind LA4s, IMO are ever more present or 'alive' sounding.

Just Friends came in two versions: D2D (silver cover) and from tape (brown cover). I have both here.

I have a signed copy with an inscription by Amanda, it was gotten at the Monster cable party that CES. no excuses, i think its a super vocal record from someone with a great 'stage voice' if you like that kind of thing. IMHO it edges out the sonics on the D2D she did for Sheffield

Haven't heard this one in years. Bishop/Parker recording.

Not you typical stodgy, boring British composer. The Cello Concerto is a wonderful piece with its lamentation and despair about WWII and the end of the Victorian period. Arguably Elgar's last great composition. Pretty good sound too, with just a tiny bit of congestion on peaks.
