  • The Magic Shop Recording Studio

You may have read about last year the last gasp attempt to save this studio in NYC. Sadly it appears all efforts failed and the studio will be closing its doors on March 16th.

After 27 years in business, and a roster of records by Lou Reed, David Bowie, Sonic Youth and others, the Magic Shop faces closure.

They hit the nail on the head. Over the past 10yr., it is now viable for a band to buy less than $1k worth of recording gear and do everything in their living room. The days of multi-thousand dollar projects are just like the studios that did them... History!
And I can vouch for the tape transfer business. The only perk I get out of it, besides a few hundred bucks, is sublime listening enjoyment from these old tapes.

Since you only use the best gear for everything, seems you would have to do lots of transfers to pay for the equipment if it was your only business?!?!

For the money I've put in the studio, I just broke even last year after 8yr. Now with buying new equipment, I'm at break even.......

It just doesn't make good business sense for a studio to pay rent... especially in NY or LA.... I'm just fortunate that my studio is in my home!
