  • Record Store Day - April 16, 2016

    Anyone partaking?

Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly 1400 independently owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally. The first Record Store Day took place on April 19, 2008. Today there are Record Store Day participating stores on every continent except Antarctica.

The one title I'd like is Jimi Hendrix - Smash Hits. It's a Sony/Legacy reissue and limited to 5,000 numbered copies.

I did partake then realized the dealers themselves corrupted the spirit by posting LPs on ebay for a premium. I also have an aversion to long lines which is a problem when 10 people in line w/ you are after the same three copies of an RSD exclusive release...Then, when the dust settles the RSD "exclusive" becomes available for widespread release for 50% less than you paid on ebay.

I don't disagree, but I prefer not to be as cynical when RSD comes around. I look at it as a fun day and if I find what I came for....bonus!

Johnny, sorry I didnt want to turn your thread into a pity party...I did scan the list and there are several releases that look interesting. I'll do what Garth does and avoid the rush and rummage through the leftovers at a later date. Let us know how you fared and which pressing you think are must haves.

No problem Rob! I only scanned the list briefly, so I don't know what else I'll be getting, but I'll let you know what I get.

It is about money not music if you want a good deal go on a day when you are the only customer in the store and ask for a deal. If 50 people are standing behind you with a credit card in hand the only thing that is going to happen is 50 people wishing you would move faster.

To me it's a day whereby like-minded people with an interest in vinyl come together and enjoy the atmosphere of a special day. I've usually been able to pick up what I want or some of it anyway and have enjoyed the excursion. I really don't understand the negativity.

I, for the most part am of similar mind to J Vinyl. Our local Milwaukee shops have made the day one of festivities and celebration. Live music, snacks, attended by collectors and non-collectors alike. The very limited editions and ridiculous eBay pricing have, unfortunately tainted an otherwise we'll intended commercial experience.
I also believe RSD may have been a strong contributor to the vinyl resurgence and aid in keeping shop doors open. Store owners have been as impressed with sales figures; possibly more so than during the holiday season.
Avalon Time, Walker Proscenium, Koetsu Coralstone, Air Tight PC-1 Supreme, Goldfinger Statement, Dalby record weight, Kondo KSL-SFz step-up, Jadis JP80-MC...heavily modified, Convergent Audio JL-2 Black Path, Sony NS999 ES Modwright modded, full loom High Fidelity Ultimate cables, Rel S-5 sub, Stillpoints ultra and 5's, Shun Mook, Dalby footers, Critical Mass bases, Acoustic System Resonators, Magnum Dynalab Etude, Telefunkens throughout, assorted fuses, Furutech outlets, PurePower conditioner.

I've only participated in RSD once maybe four or five years ago when in LA receiving an award for personal training. It was a great day going to Amoeba Records Hollywood and the grand opening of the Brooks Berdan's record store. Along with a side trip to Sunny's Components.

Funny thing is that have been to Amoeba LA and SF several times and have rarely come away with anything.

Seems to be bigger in other parts of the country than in New York. Then again the record stores here are drying up.

Maybe NY is running out of hipsters I could take a week off and not have enough time to visit every hole-in-the-wall record seller in So. Cal its fairly vital out here, something I couldn't say ten years ago.

I got the same feeling about SF when I visited Magico last summer. Plenty of record stores and I didn't get to 1/2 of them.

It's fairly slim pickings here in Calgary as well. I really miss Toronto for vinyl shopping. I knew of at least two dozen stores there.

Yes, i like to do a couple of visits to shops on RSD.
Always end up with something. Not always from my list. Great fun and i actually like the buzz of a full record store. The irony is that some stores are actually choosing not to participate in RSD for a multitude of reasons, including the people that presell or non-music lovers that line up to buy ltd releases to flip on the Bay.
