  • Must have LPs for Shows

    Guys,

As I just started to collect LPs for the very first time, other than messing around with my Dad's a very long time ago, please give me some recommendations as to what albums I should obtain so we can play to our room visitors.

I am open to any genre(s).

    TIA.

Thanks again Steve & your son.

Hendrix - Live at the Avalon (Like a Rolling Stone and Hey Joe)
The Roches - Another World (Come Softly)
Etta James - pretty much anything she does
Patsy Cline - pretty much anything she does
Led Zeppelin II - the very rare recalled first US pressing
Beatles - Parlaphone monos or the new mono pressings
Count Basie - Any selection that swwwiiinnngs.
Crack the Sky - Safety in Numbers, seriously, won't be anyone else demoing this one.

In other words, avoid the same every time boring audiophile chestnuts. You've got a couple of days to generate enthusiasm and make a memorable impression. If you want to generate interest from customers vice reviewers , play something with some drive and kick to it. Set yourself apart, look at what everyone else is using for demo and don't use it yourself. Have a fun room.

Thanks for the wise advice Rust.

      I totally agree with you.

In the past, anywhere we went was Diana Krall. :-)

When I stop by your room in Newport, I'll have three LPs with me:

Sublime - (the same one my son brought last year) I loved how your room filled up completely when we played this.
Samantha Crain - Under Branch & Thorn & Tree
Alec Lytle and them Rounders - The End of Ours

I'll also have a USB stick with a bunch of CD rips, 24 bit and DSD files just in case.

Are you really going to bring your Triangle Art table?

Whoever here goes to Newport, make sure to stop by Hugh's room. It was one of the best sounding rooms at the show last year with the standard issue ACA Seraphims playing.

Dreaming w Dean: Dean Martin. Music is hit or miss, but the sonics are easily demo quality. I've played that in my room and one person said you can smell the gin on Dean's breadth.

For female vocals, Vanessa Fernandez has been a staple at shows last year, but I think Shelby Lynn latest reissue would be good, too.

Mid-70's Piros cut with cc in deadwax and pressed at Monarch is one of the best sounding copies of LZ1; I also got turned on to a 3rd Japanese press which is very good. I have both the 180 Classic 33 LZ and the 45 rpm. I prefer the standard issue pressings- they sound more 'of a piece.' You should be able to find the Piros/Monarch for less than $100 but top condition may require some hunting; it is referred to repeatedly on the Hoffman forum, for good reason.

Instead of mostly playing audiophile pressings or newer 180g reissues, why not play some original standard pressings. The vast majority of our collections consist of the latter, so it would be nice to hear them on a product one may/might be interested in.

A few that come to mind.

Second, Allen's recommendation of Dean Martin.

Some others that come to mind:

Elvis '57 (side 4 Peace in the Valley)
Neil Young Live at the Cellar Door
Smoke and Mirrors and Janaki String Quartet on Yarlung Records
            Brothers in Arms Mofi release
Blues and The Abstract Truth-45 rpm issue
Kenny Burrell - Guitar Forms Speakers Corner
Julie London - Latin in a Satin Mood - Analogue Products

One other thought--get ahold of Chad and get some of the test pressings he'll be passing out at the show!!!
