    According to Music Matters Jazz and close family members, Rudy van Gelder passed away today just a couple of months short of 92. Few if any people have had more of an impact on jazz than Rudy and his work will be immortalized forever for all jazz fans to hear.

      Sadly confirmation.


      Just got word that My uncle, legendary recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder died. From the time I started playing drums at 9, through my days at Berklee College of Music and beyond, his work touched every part of my life. More importantly, so many others too. It's still surreal seeing the pictures taken in my grandparent's living room in Hackensack that graced so many early blue note albums. The tradition of ahead-of-their-time recordings continued in Englewood. I've tagged those who have reached out over the years to tell me what recording WITH him meant to them, and what his recordings meant TO them. I hope they don't mind. .... -Todd.

                If the USA had any collective sense, it would issue a commemorative stamp in his honor. His work not only lifted music and musicians to a new level but African Americans as well during a terrible period in U S racial relations history.

                  Funny thing is though many think that Rudy's best work was with Blue Note, my favorite are his Impulse recordings. It is interesting how the "sound" of his recordings changed with each label he worked with say Prestige, Blue Note, Impulse, CTI, Bluesville and other labels. His classical recordings though never did anything for me.

                    I can't say that I agree with all the opinions in this article especially Steve's H's. I know Steve has been saying that for a while but I don't necessarily agree. That said, Steve was referring to the Blue Notes and not the other labels when he was talking about pegging the VU meters. I've never heard any of the author's recordings.

                    Too also lump all his recordings together is a mistake. IMHO, the Impulse days were the best of the RVGs on the whole, though there are some others scattered around on other labels like BN, CTI, Bluesville, Moodsville, Verve, Prestige, etc. Of the various comments, the one that might hold the most water are those on the sound of RVG's pianos eg. being somewhat muffled.
                    For many people in the recording trade, Rudy Van Gelder might be the most overrated engineer in audio history. But for audio producer George Hicks, the so-called "Blue Note sound" has always been a musical, rather than audio, innovation, and Van Gelder less a peerless technician than a sonic visionary.
