  • For the .01 percenter vinyl lovers

If you are anticipating a really big tax refund (especially next year!) and you have all the EMI SAX Kogans, look at this offering from Devialet (lost recordings), especially the lacquers. Or you could buy a new Camry for someone in your household staff!
Or you can order plain vinyl or wait for the CD or digital download. Larry

I would certainly be interested in the LPs. I am always up for a new Bill Evans album.

I don't get the lacquer thing. Lacquers degrade as soon as they are cut and you can only play them four or so times before they get noisy and the highs degrade. So play them once and transfer to digital or tape?

The question as always is are these albums all analog (or digital releases)? There was something on the Devialet project on Part-time Audiophile but the author never asked this important question. At least for some of us anyway. And a red flag goes up anytime they say the tapes were carefully restored.

I was in for an LP or two but the only feedback I've seen from someone who ordered said they sent it back and that the pressing quality was horrible.

I wish Devialet could just go away ...

      But!
It´s always nice that people start issuing records.
The lacquers seems a bit over the top but would be fun to hear.

On the other hand, even if one buy all three lacquers, it is still cheaper than Mike L's cables. Do you think they would offer quantity discount if one buys all three lacquers? (Ok, my last attempt for humor this morning)

Change my comparison to 3 lacquers or a Honda Accord! Larry

My one experience with a lacquer was back in 2010 when I was trying to determine the best combination of software and hardware for my massive (now thankfully complete) vinyl ripping project. We had a shootout at my home with several ADACs and some different software. My consultant Tim Marutani arranged for Paul Stubblebine to run the show, so our methodology would be consistent and recorded properly. For the occasion, Paul cut a lacquer (of the RefRec Rach Symphonic Dances - well before it was ever released on vinyl). We played the first cut as one of the references (along with two of my favorite recordings, including one digital - the Lyrita Arnold Dances and Jennifer Warnes FBR). The lacquer was pristine, having been freshly cut. We played it about six times. That was it. Unfortunately, I didn't think to ask Paul to leave it with me as a souvenir of the occasion.

BTW, as a result of the shootout, I ended up choosing a Pacific Microsonics Model Two and Merging Pyramix and Mikyrinos card for the ripping project. Of course, I picked the ADAC that was unobtainable, but Tim, with help from Maier Shadi (of Audio Salon in Santa Monica) who was there to witness the proceedings, located one a few months later at Warner Bros studios!

I have a good few lacquers from Classic records. To me..the sound improvement over vinyl is negligible. I have even heard pops and ticks on a new lacquer. The cost for these is obscene for literally 15 ever degrading plays.

Makes more sense for them to offer R2R copies of the master tapes. Of course, as Myles intimated in #3, if they aren't using the analogue masters for making the lacquers ...
