  • Lauren Mann - dearestry (08-18-2016)

Canada Boy vinyl posted their pressing of local Calgary artist Lauren Mann. Her site allows you to preview the album and/or buy a download for whatever price you want. I liked it enough to order the 2LP set. Lauren said it was digitally recorded and mixed in the analog domain. I'm not really understanding that part of it, so someone please enlighten me.

The bottom line however is that I like her voice, her music and it's lyrical content, so I ordered it.

I listened to one of the preview tracks and over my crap top, it sounded pretty good. Since you ordered it, let me know how it sounds and if you think it is a decently made record, I'll buy it. As to digital recording, mixed analog, one way is to record the thing to a digitally, dump it to tape and do the mix down to the two track master, then, what? Master from tape, or transfer the analog tape back to a digital file for the vinyl mastering. I know there are systems that essentially provide a "tape" step in the mix down process for this purpose- it is usually done to "sweeten" the sound. I'm sure there are other ways, too. Hard to say without knowing more about how she did it, though.
This link also explains how a digital recording can be sent through an analog console (with the kind of outboard processing that is characteristic of analog sound) for mixing (without, apparently, any transfer to tape- presumably the analog mix is converted back to digital for the master recording). http://www.mix-engineer.com/audio-ph...analog-mixing/

It did sound quite nice hearing it through my laptop as well, which kinda encouraged me. I obviously ordered the LP because I like the content, but also because I'm really curious as to the Canada Boy Vinyl pressing quality. Call me weird. Thanks for the link.

Maybe more common than we think? I know Cookie at Blue Coast Records does this as does Jim Anderson of Patricia Barber fame.

Johnny, where did you order the LP? I don't see an option for anything but digital on her website...

It's there. Just scroll down a little and all of the pre-order options are there.

I received this 2LP album yesterday. You can tell that it's not a ful AAA product, but it doesn't sound digital either. I quite like the music, but felt a bit ho-hum on the production of it on some songs. I think some of it wasn't needed...think less is more, but then I'm not the artist. I was also really interested in the vinyl quality as this was the first record I now have that was pressed at Calgary's Canada Boy Vinyl. This album is pressed on 2 discs of 140g vinyl with 3 playable sides. The 4th is a blank. All 3 sides were very clean, perfectly flat and quiet. No fingerprints, no debris, no scuff marks...very nice. However, Side 2 was noticeably (not excessively) off-centre, but it did not affect playback at all.

I'm a big proponent of supporting Canadian talent and industry, and I'm pleased to say that I've once more done so.
