  • Update to the Spirit vs. Led Zepellin Plagiarism Lawsuit

The legacy of Led Zeppelin is now coming under attack, with open admissions of plagiarism from both Jimmy Page and Robert Plant.

    Thanks for the post Myles.
Even though they openly admit to this, the songs were very much different. I wonder what the tolerance/amount is allowed to be used from a song before it's plagiarism.

Can you imagine if they rule in favor of spirit what the settlement will be? HUGE amount of royalties over the decades....

It would be crazy numbers, and how many more suits would follow by other musicians and bands that had songs with anything similar. This ruling could open a giant can of worms in the music industry.

Funny thing, this has been part of music, well forever. Read Bob Dylan's book and how folks singers always took from each other and expanded the music. Enter the almighty dollar.

right ? So many simple blues chord progressions used in so many different songs by many different artists.

Did you see the Keith Richards bio on Netflix where Keith describes the first time he met Mick on a train in the UK? They were both travelling with records under their arms and look at each others LPs (of American blues players) and remarked, "I didn't think anyone else listened to these records." Well we know so much of Led Zepellin and other rock groups--take even Rod Stewart--came from the old American blues artists. Oh and Elvis made blues music palatable for white people. Not to mention even jazz too. I think Kenny Burrell is more of a blues than jazz guitarist. Certainly a brilliant marriage of the two musical genres.

If beauty is in the eye of the beholder then song similarity is in the ear of the listener. Find it so hard to say for sure if something was ripped off or not..

The Led Zeppelin suit in question is coming from a dead man, its the estate of the songwriter that is suing.

California's family urged him to sue decades back. He didn't have the resources. He should have received credit during his life, he shouldn't have needed to sue.
