  • A Salute to the Chairman of the Board

He would have been 101 today. Musician, actor, artist, he did it all. He sure knew how to deliver a song!
Frank Sinatra was born in Hoboken, New Jersey, to Italian immigrants Natalina Della (Garaventa), from Northern Italy, and Saverio Antonino Martino ...

One for the Road is so politically incorrect for numerous reasons. Smoking on stage and telling the bartender to make him another drink for the road. What a voice though.

Go back and watch all the movies from the '50s and '60s and every actor and actress has a cigarette in their hand!

One of my favorite artists. You can tell the good Sinatra from the bad Sinatra easily. If he's still wearing a hat, its the good Sinatra.

My favorite Sinatra story was from the '50's when he was married to the super glamorous actress Ava Gardner. (That was after first wife Nancy and before third wife Mia Farrow). Famed Decca producer John Culshaw had been lured to Capitol Records to head their new classical division. He had to travel from London to Hollywood where Capitol Records was located. There he met SInatra, who was a Capitol artist. Sinatra found out Culshaw was visiting from London and asked him whether he could take a small package back to his wife who was in London doing a movie. Culshaw agreed, but forgot about the package he was carrying, when he went through security. The package was discovered and the officials asked Culshaw what was in the package. He said he didn't know. He told them Frank Sinatra gave it to him to give to Ava Gardner. Of course, they didn't believe him. They opened the package and it was some chocolates. Culshaw delivered the package to Gardner at her hotel and she laughed about the story.

PS. Culshaw soon returned to Decca in time to begin his crowning achievement, the Solti Ring.

Ava was one shrewd lady, she revived Frank by changing his image from that of a "crooner" to "rat-pack" cool movie star. Ava largely responsible for Frank getting cast in "From Here to Eternity" 1953.
