  • Roxy Music - the high road

This is a 4-song EP recorded at the Apollo Theatre in Glasgow, Scotland in August of 1982. It was released by Warner in the U.S./Canada and Polygram in the U.K. in 1983.

It is an outstanding domestic pressing and I recommend it highly.

Roxy Music's first five LPs (Roxy Music, For Your Pleasure, Stranded, Country Life, and Siren) are all pretty amazing albums. They are an acquired taste and can be somewhat challenging to listen to. I think most audiophiles ignore them because unfortunately they aren't well produced. For anyone not familiar with their early work, but who own Avalon because it is a great recording, are in for a surprise. I can't imaging ever going more than a few months without playing Mother of Pearl off the Stranded album.
Roxy Music also happened to put on great concerts. I saw them when they toured for Siren, and it was probably one of the top three or four rock concerts I've ever attended, from a performance and sound standpoint.

I also have Avalon only. I'll check the earlier works out as you suggest Steve. Is it just me or does KD Lang look like Bryan Ferry's long lost sister?

What songs are on the EP John?

A friend of mine who is also a Roxy Music fan also suggested I start with Avalon. Is it just more accessible than other RM LPs? I saw the CD at PrEx for >$50, might've been closer to $80. Is it that good?

Avalon is a lot more accessible, and also much better recorded. It is also quite different musically, Allmusic does a pretty good job explaining them. http://www.allmusic.com/artist/roxy-...2855/biography

Are you talking about the CD or the SACD? The SACD is very, very pricey......

The best LP copy is the Simply Vinyl release with the round seal at the back of the outer sleeve.

I've had an original UK copy of Avalon since it was first released. Spun it not that long ago for my audio posse and we were all a bit surprised at how blaaah it sounded. Fremer raves about the UK pressing over the US but I have a feeling he may have it backwards. The SACD ripped the vinyl to shreds.

I think I bought the UK version after Mikey's review. Sonically it was ho-hum. Haven't played it in a while but one thing I remember is that the album was very murky sounding.
