  • The contributions by Eric Clapton to Rock/Blues/Pop.

Eric Clapton has been one of the most prolific artists in popular music. From his days as a member of The Yardbirds, which he joined in October 1963, to his latest album "I Still Do" (release date May 20, 2016), this represents 53 years of recording activity. During that time he was a member of various bands (Yardbirds, Bluesbreakers(2), Powerhouse, Cream, Blind Faith, Delaney and Bonnie and Friends, Derek & The Dominoes), recorded 23 solo albums, and the list goes on and on. In total his participation has resulted in an output of 163 albums (bands, solo, soundtracks, live, compilations, contributions). And as far as I know he has expressed no desire to call it a day, and to focus instead on his cars and fly-fishing hobbies.

I've always been a big fan right from day one and I've put together a nice collection of albums over the decades. I saw him live 3 times in Montreal in the early-mid seventies, and the tickets were free too, as I worked for Polygram Canada back then and RSO was one of labels in their stable. Hearing him perform several songs from 461 Ocean Boulevard still sends shivers up my spine, and I still think it's his best solo album ever.

What's your opinion of EC and his contributions?

he's a great player, but as far as songwriting, not as good as Page who in turn is not as good a player.

I would also give some credit to John Mayall for EC's success as a blues player.

How much of that do you think is Clapton being locked into the 12-bar Blues structure?
