Man I would love to try a Van Den Hul….Myles - You have tested several of this family of cartridges. Could you give us a brief walk down of the differences between his mid level cartridges vs. his upper end Strads. Which cartridge is at the 90-95% point? Where does the point of diminishing returns happen in this line?....TKS

        Myles,

Did you ever do a formal review of the Fatboy Tonearm? I knew it was in the works for a while, but not sure if I missed it.

Good question. I haven’t gone down to the Crimson like Andre but for me the Colibri XGW Stradivarius might be the sweet spot. I think one gets a real good taste of what AJ’s bigger transducers do. Particularly when it comes to 1) capturing an instrument’s harmonic overtones and 2) retrieving the tiniest nuances off the record.

The Master Signature definitely has the vdh DNA in spades and more. Even with less than a dozen hours under its belt, the Colibri exhibits simply breath taking low level resolution. You know. All those little things that bring the music to life. The softest, tiniest tap of the cymbals. A single soft chord strummed on the guitar while the sax player is taking his solo.

Brought the loading up to 180 ohms (internal impedance = 13 ohms) that really opened the cartridge up and increased the transient speed. Stay tuned.

Putting the hours in and the Colibri starting to open up. Pretty stunning transparency and dynamics.

                    Myles,

out of curiosity where did you start with the loading?

did the different loadings offer more of this or that?

I usually start 10x the cartridge’internal impedance (iirc the Colibri internal impedance is 13 ohms) . I’ll drop until sounds sluggish and compressed just to know where I am. Since still breaking in, I’m not getting crazy yet. Plus figured should be the same or in same neighborhood as the Signature reviewed last year.

Course that number will vary a little with system, phonostage, tubes or ss, arm, etc.

Of a dozen carts I own, this Master Sig is the most energetic, vivid, resolute and transparent. Simply an awesome cart. Best value comparing to other uber carts. It is a little more sensitive to what on the surface of vinyl than other carts but this sensitivity or quickness seem to translate into extraordinary livelyness. Changing from carbon arm to steel arm can unleash its dna a bit more.
