One of the first VPI Fatboys off the assembly line. Requested from Mat and Harry not only to hear and review but to use with the low compliance, heavier mass Fuuga cartridge that is in house for review. Even though the importer said go ahead and try the cartridge in the lighter 3D arm, just felt that the heavier Fatboy made a much better match for the Fuuga.

First impressions. This is really a new arm and should be thought of a second or probably third generation VPI 3D arm rather than just a catchy name. The new arm is a dual pivot design (that looks slightly redesigned for the better) and comes with a very fine, adjustable, CW. The black knob on the back of the arm moves the CW back and forth in very fine increments. Unlock the set screw holding the CW, set VTF using the knob and then relock the CW down. Also you don’t need to rotate the CW but a smidge for the dual pivot. It might just be because of the heavier mass of the arm (not sure what that is yet) but it looks like a little more mass has been added below the pivot point. Also notice the new thicker 3D arm wand isn’t a one piece design like the earlier arms. Harry had been doing some listening and found wasn’t critical that the entire arm-just the region starting with the headshell up to the pivot-be one piece. Most likely due to mechanical impedance and resonances.

Plus I think it looks a lot nicer and a much more finished product. I really like the finish on the arm.

    More to come.

I totally agree with Tango. Single wire looms are the way to go for ultimate sound quality. I will go so far to say that they are more significant than recent tonearm and phono cartridge advancement. I will add a thread on this soon.

Myles, you can also use the Azimuth weights turned out on the inboard side to load the dual pivot. This is how I do that on my Prime Sig. No need to turn the CW.

Yes you are right. Probably easier. The amount of pressure affects the sound.

I for one am very anxious to see your thoughts on the Fat Boy.....From the pics the cosmetics still look a bit clunky and unfinished IMO. I hope it looks more refined in person. Ultimately we need to know if it genuinely sounds "better", "worse", or just different than the 3DR.

    Thanks
