I’m sure you will enjoy this masterpiece Myles.

Loved watching Mr. A.J. Van Den Hul build one of his cartridges live at Chicago Axpona 2018 (and later speaking with this gentleman). Which I might add he offered and then sold for half price to a fortunate attendee and then contributed what I understood to be one-hundred percent of the proceeds to a charity. He also did a check-up and alignment to several used cartridges that folks brought in. Noting specifically that on examination of one stylus the need of a reduction in anti skate by a specific percentage and suggested hours remaining in their lifespan. Very cool.

        Cheers!

No it’s a new cartridge above the recently reviewed Colibri Signature Stradivarius. The Colibri Master Signature uses a different (harder) wood body than the Signature reviewed. I can’t remember whether it is a Brazilian or African hardwood. Let you know when I find out.

              Not sure about price.

              1.1 mV output.

Not quite sure I understand your question Garth. Are you asking whether cartridges sound better naked with or clothed?

If that’s it, I’m not dogmatic about the situation having heard good examples of both. Unless nude cartridges send chills down your spine. But nude cartridges are also the easiest cartridges to align-and feel that the setup is perfect. Remember that the body is just one part of cartridge design.

                    Yes that is an issue.

Unless you can borrow a friend’s cartridge or bring yours over the their place.

I haven’t heard the Coralstone, only the Azule Platinum. Some really like the Jade. In this case, it would seem that the body is used to tune the sound of the cartridge. Some other cartridge designers use wood in that matter.

But in the end, it also has to affect how resonances generated during playback are directed into the tonearm. Even how resonances travel up the cantilever and are reflected out of phase to the original pulse.

In the Colibri's case, they're light trackers which is why you'll never find a stone body on one. Wth Myles' cart he recommends a VTF of 1.35-1.5g...to the best of my knowledge all of AJ's carts are meant for light-med mass arms of less than 12g, guys swingin' a 12 & 14" schwanz err tonearm, need not apply, in most if not all cases

AJ recommends using the Colibris with arms having an effective mass of 10-16 g.

At Munich this cartridge on the Garrard with the Schick arm in the WE room was sounding fantastic. Also with the Stabi M in the vox Palladian room. I asked both Kevin Scott and Thomas Schick and Schroeder why it sounds so good here while it can sound bright or etched or thin in some set ups. They said apart from alignment and loading being extremely crucial to this cart, they get it made for their tonearm from VdH

There was also a vdh cartridge set up on an VPI Avenger Reference with a 12-inch Fatboy that reportedly sounded amazing.

Truth be told, name a top cartridge doesn’t require attention to detail? I’ve reviewed Lyra, vdh, Koetsu, Ortofon, Transfig, etc and geometry is critical for getting the most out of all these cartridges. But sorry I don’t hear that vdh “brightness” or “etched” quality here if not quite up to snuff. Grasshopper yes, Colibri no. Especially with gold wire windings.in fact, the Colibri is the least mechanical sounding cartridge I’ve ever heard. And the Magicos would certainly ruthlessly reveal that problem. There is something else going on.
