Doc, where does the 6DJ8 and its family fit in your scheme re small signal tubes? (ECC88, E88CC, 6922, 6N23P, 6N11) there was a war of words back in the day between Roger Modjeski and David Manley whether the 6DJ8 was even appropriate for audio use (widely used at the time by Counterpoint, ARC, et al). AFAIK, CJ never used them in their preamps at least not thru the '90s. -
6DJ8 tubes were originally designed for TV tuners, not audio. They are prone to being highly microphonic. Dr. Ears-Where do you get your info on tubes that are the most counterfeited? Why would someone spend their time counterfeiting tubes that aren't that common and many people including audiophiles don't know much about? Why wouldn't you spend your time counterfeiting tubes that are well known, widely used, and have a big demand like the 12AX7 family of tubes?

Not to go too much OT but there's also 7DJ8s/PC88s that sound darn good depending on where and how they are used.
CJ used 6922s to great effect as driver tubes in their amplifiers. They switched to the 6H30 and 8080 to lower driver stage impedance. The Phillips 7DJ8s (and same for the Tele) also was quite an improvement over 6922s in the GAT preamplifier. Some friends also found the Tele 7DJ8s sounded better in the driver section of cj amplifiers in place of the Russian 6922s.Myles B. Astor, PhD, Administrator

Agreed that can be one particular scenario. But some manufacturers, EAR and cj come to mind, design around the PC88 now. Definitely was worth a gamble when say the Tele PC88s were practically given away at $25/tube. But their availability and price went up as people found out about the tube.
And you can have bad results too as I found out with the Bottlehead Repro. There Dan uses an old trick running the 6 V tube at a little lower voltage to lower noise. So using a 7 V tube really didn't work in this situation at all.
One day will have to try a "real" Phillips PC88 in my preamplifier. The PC88s that cj uses are sourced from Kevin Deal and as best can figure out, are Phillips parts assembled in Yugoslavia eg. EI factory. But must be some real, earlier vintage Phillips PC88s around too.
