I used to use a pair of gloves that one of the tube stores used to sell but they don't seem to be available anymore.
Personally, I would be careful anyway. Just not sure how those innards like being disturbed when hot.

Here is a picture of a GE tube puller. It could be used for two different sized tubes. You simply place it over the top of a hot tube and it snugly holds the tube as you pull up and remove it from the socket.

Electroharmonics made the exact same tube puller but the item is apparently either out of stock or discontinued. Now here's an idea for an income supplement. I always envied Steve McCormack and Joyce Flemming coming up with the tiptoe idea. They sold over 8 million of these items at what $7 each?
