  • Audio Rack Recommendation

A friend of mine has an Audiav rack with a large top shelf for his turntable that is functionally good and aesthetically pleasing. It is on my short list. MikeL uses a simple Adona Zero rack with good results (with the Herzan active vibration killer).
    What should I get?

Ki-I'm in the market for a new rack too. I need a wide "low boy" rack.
Micro Seiki SX-8000 table with flywheel, SME 3012R arm, SME 312S arm, Lyra Etna SL and Dynavector XV-1S cartridges, ARC Ref 3 phono stage, Otari MX-55 tape deck, Ampex 350 repros, Roon Nucleus Plus server, PS Audio DSJ DAC, ARC Ref 6 pre, ARC Ref 75 amp, Parasound JC5 amp, JBL 4345 speakers, and Def Tech Ref subs.

I guess it all comes down to cost. For me, the best looking racks are Kevin Tellekamp's Silent Running Audio or Peter Bizlewitz's Symposium racks. Peter also has a new killer rack out too called the Osiris.

But the better racks are far from cheap. The Scuttle is $7500.

Like the HRS, Symposium and the Critical Mass--one can always add another platform--or like Mike did the Herzan table.

If MEP is interested, Symposium is also marketing a low wide rack using Peter Bizlewitz's Isis Rack technology. I might have purchased that one but the Isis is a 3 leg affair so if you have a component with a center iec it may present a problem with an AC cord. That's why I opted for the new Reference and more $$$ Osiris on 4 legs. The symposiums and the SRA are terrific. The HRS Racks aren't exactly for chumps either. All good products.

Ki Choi. "Functionally good and aesthetically pleasing?" We are talking about audio right?

              mep,

Have a look at the Solid Steel HW-2L. Made in Italy, and $1400, or $2200 for the model with 3 levels.

if I were in the mood to do my racks over..based on the construction and performance of an HRS platform (64lbs) I have for the TechDas...I would go HRS if you want to be that spendy.

Greg Weaver (TAS?) uses a Grand Prix rack and said it made a significant difference with his Sparta. Anyone know much about these racks? Pricey? Effective?

I too would like a double wide SRA rack , but too rich for my blood. :-(

Just to play devil's advocate. Would you be better off investing more in the platform the table sits on rather than worrying as much as the rack?

Good question, Myles. While I don't think you were specifically thinking of these, I always wondered is it better to get a cheaper rack and add Stillpoints and tweak as necessary, or get a good overall rack like SRA or HRS and eschew the platforms...

Myles, because I started with just the footers with Symposium and built from there adding platforms and eventually the rack that every layer on the cake increased performance greatly. I asked the same question you are asking before I bought the rack. The rack in the end made as much difference as all the footers and platforms combined IMO.

Why do most of the audio specific racks look like an erector set experiment on steroids? Give me sturdy with beautiful wood any day. I can sacrifice sonics for asthetics.

Agree, Marty. I love wooden racks. Have you seen Kanso racks? Japanese influenced design, all wood racks. Beautiful.
