  • Studio Alchemist NAB Isolator

Made by one of Jonathan Horwich’s Taiwanese customers.

    Studio Alchemist NAB ISOLATOR

Isolate or decouple your NAB metal reel from reel motor. There are two sets of contact springs to have minimum contact surfaces with metal reel and reel motor table. One set is located underneath so there are only three point contact with reel motor table. Second set is located on the side of ISOLATOR to have three point contact with your NAB metal reel. CNC main body ensures the true roundness can be achieved. The upper tripod part works as locking system to prevent your reel falling down when RTR operates vertically.

For more than a year, the golden artist is special and should be the world's first high-END NAB Adapter-NAB Isolator is finally born. December start supply. Fortunately, the effect of the product is better than the test. I am satisfied because the stability of the replay, the high-Frequency Extension and resolution, as well as the improvement in dynamic, should be visible.
For my design ideas please refer to this one:

Yes, I will be carrying them soon as so far they operate excellently. They are made for Studer/Revox type machines and I use Sony's so my testing is limited. Sending to Myles for final confirmation. I do love how they operate so far.

I hope Technics has Revox type spring loaded posts. The kind of post you pull out and twist to hold on the NAB adaptor. Myles, double check that on your 1500.

SO, I guess the title means that you can't use them with IEC tapes. Really narrows your choice of material!!!

The term "NAB" here is generic for that type of hold down on that kind of reel.

Yeah the “NAB HUB” has *nothing* to do with tapes being NAB or IEC EG...all tapes from Tape project, APO, IPI, etc, and IEC EQ and come on NAB hub reels 😁

No, I used them with both NAB and IEC tapes.

What you can’t use them with are Greg Beron’s UHA reels that are a tad thicker than normal reels.

You also really need to use them on decks in the horizontal position. They made a noise on my deck that is used in the vertical position when spooling that really made me wonder if were putting undo stress on the machine’s motors. Last I heard the designer (who is also a customer of Jonathan’s from Taiwan) was supposed to be updating the hubs with input from users and Soren (who gave him some feedback).

That said, the hubs definitely improved the sound. There was far more low level information and inner detail on tapes. Along with just a more solid presentation and midrange. I would definitely get them—though not inexpensive—if the few issues were ironed out. Though it seems just on on the supply reel reduces wow and flutter by roughly a third.

News flash. Just received an email from Greg that he is sending some new screws for his UHA reels that, “reduce the thickness of the reel a fair bit.”

So my UHA reels will fit if a new V. 2 version of the hubs arrive.

Unfortunately I had only one NAB Isolator that time.
I will repeat the measurement session with NAB Isolators on both reel plates in the future. Results will be better, of course.
