I want to thank all here and especially the three below
i just got my estimate from soren on my Otari mtr 10
i personally feel it's not just fair but very very fair.
Since this tape journey started it has been a very steep learning curve and plenty could have gone wrong especially as I have little patience in waiting times.
This forum as well as the men listed below have held my hands and guidance.
        The results are just awesome.
        Thanks to all.

As people here have mentioned, one should assume that a 50 year old tape recorder will require a complete overhaul by a very good technician when purchased. New reel motor bearings, a total recap, perhaps head re-lapping, correct lubrication and of course a calibration with MRL tapes. And there could very well be other issues that would require repair.

I too have been down this road, paying many thousands of dollars for a Studer A810 that was supposedly 'completely serviced' only to find it needed a total rebuild. Fortunately for me I have a friend who is a genius, he really is a master technician, who was able to do all the repair work for me. He does the modifications on all my equipment at a professional level, and quite frankly brings my equipment to better than new condition using the best electronic components available today. You are not alone! My Studer A80 is still awaiting a complete rebuild.

So true. One can bank on getting a basket case no matter what the seller says. Don't believe a word of what is said. Assume the worst when you buy. Always. I've only had one workable deck delivered to me and that was by Ki Choi and it was a perfect Studer 810. But Ki Choi is the exception.

I've been lucky in buying an otari machine to Jonathan's and Soren's surprise. But In a short time the caps inside died off making the sound dull.
I could of changed them out but it was setup to go to soren so did not.
old vintage tape and any other items all need big service but rarely is done.
A tape machine is more complex as it's a mech and electronic device. where most other devices are mostly just electronic
i feel anyone who buys vintage needs to be aware of what's needed and it's sad most sellers lie and even service techs too.

What a trip Al. I backed of from tape for all the headach you have gone through. I was going to purchase one of Gene's Otari but he did nothing with the caps. Said they last forever. I new that was not true. While negotiating he said he could make duplicates of some tapes for me at a fair price. A couple months later when I was close to pulling the trigger, he had sold all his tapes and no longer used tape. He saud he had lot's of great records. Made me pause hard.

Kingrex. Yes, initially truly fixing up a pro tape deck is a mental, financial, and patience-stretching pain in the back area of one's anatomy. But once done right, really right, it is no different than owing a good turntable. In 5 years I've had maybe 3 things worth mentioning go wrong on a machine -- If that. And I own 5 machines. I've never had a major breakdown. And the financial investment is not much more than a good turntable. The initial lead time is indeed longer than getting a plug and play good turntable. If one can wait for the initial revamp of the deck, it is worth it.

Got my new old deck back from soren and all I can say is a big wow tape is mad cool. It jumps at you and vocals are surreal in your room.
Soren is a great guy who is very good to work with.
he is doing over my second deck. It's the same
model MTR-10 but it will be 1/2 and 1/4 combo capable of playing or recording both sizes in just a few mins to convert.
A big thanks to Myles , international phono graph and larry
for guidance and great tapes to play on these great Machines
i never knew how good this is and was lucky to have met Myles as a start on this analog journey

Al, what's your take on the sonic difference. What do you "hear" that makes the vocals surreal. We have heard the pissing matches over the technical this can or can't vs that does or does not.

Do you think it sounds in any way more close to "live", or does it "add" something,

Ok this can become toxic fast so I'll say now I have no intention of being I know in absolute terms better
vinyl is very fast and in many ways rules for analog
but tape has its virtues that vinyl so far don't have
its density makes it more surreal. Great recordings are great no matter what medium we play in.
but tape has a type of power that moves air and moves the mind too. Vocals in particular seem to be embodied more. Last night as each song played the music grew in ways that all good mediums do but tape has more growth and keeps each sound in the same place while more is added.
now keep in mind I'm not sure many hear what I do if you consider the size of my setup.
54 drivers per side and over 3 kilo watts per side
my point is it can do what the tape puts out and does not sweat it.
Paul's vocals are our front as he comes in and this is after many other players are already in play. The growth and stable details for me make the vocal it get over shadowed
                      by the rest
