  • Horch House tapes (recommendations and/or ones to avoid)

I am just starting to go down the Reel-to-Reel path and am looking to build on my library. I am interested in some of the titles available from Horch House but am looking for some recommendations before I commit to the steep prices.

Myles has a couple of the Horch House titles on his "Best of the Best" thread but I'm looking for opinions on the others. He has given his thumbs up to 2 titles in particular (in the "Highly Recommended" list):

Oscar Peterson: My Favorite Instrument, Vol 4, Horch House
    Yello: One Second, Horch House

Myles, I'm also interested in hearing your feedback on the ones that you reviewed but didn't make the cut, for whatever reasons. Even if you don't care to share the feedback, it would be nice to know which titles you've heard (and I can draw my own conclusions).

As an aside, it would be nice to have a separate thread dedicated to Reel-to-Reel releases that are best to avoid (from all producers).
    Speakers: Rockport Avior
Amp: Ypsilon Aelius Mk II (Silver Edition)
    Preamp: Pass Labs XS
Phono preamp: EMIA LR Phono Corrector, Slagle Silver SUTs
Phono: Continuum Criterion, Kuzma 4-Point, Lyra Etna SL Lambda
Digital: dCS Network Bridge, dCS Scarlatti DAC
Tape: Studer A80 RC, Doshi V3.0

Those two and Vol. 2 of the Oscar Peterson are the only ones have heard. Astrotoy or Audioblazer may have heard some of the others.

I would have liked to hear some of the George Duke.

Have a few Horch house tapes . Some of the titles are interesting . I enjoyed Ella Fitzgerald sunshine of your love . For classical tapes u may want to look into Gustav Mahler Symphony 1 D-dur & Beethoven Missa Solemnis& particularly Friedrich Gulda . I enjoyed his piano play so much that I listen thru all his LPs in 1 listening session . Quality of recordings ? I very much prefer Patricia Barber By Premonition , most of Yarlung tapes , All opus 3 that I bought , some Quintons tapes & josh berman trio of international .phonograph inc . Merely my listening preference

I have a fair number of the Horch House tapes (maybe 25 or so). All are classical except for the set of Oscar Peterson tapes (12 tapes - six albums). I'm not a big jazz fan, but OP is hard to pass up. His playing is unique and superb and the recordings are quite nice. Unlike Yarlung or UltraAnalogue, the Horch House are not in house tapes, but licensed from commercial sources. So the sound quality varies, reflecting the source. However, they are often the only way of getting a classical performance on a close to master tape quality. I like the Mahler 1 by Suitner and the Dresdent Staatskapelle (one of the two great East Germany Orchestras - the other being the Leipzig Gewandhaus). There are a few tapes from a regional German orchestra from Bavaria - live performances, nice sonics, but the playing is not to the level of the great orchestras.

          Thanks for the responses.

I had been initially considering the George Duke and Oscar Peterson HH tapes but after listening to a few of the Inga Rumpf tracks (whom I had never heard of before), I was intrigued enough to ask if anyone thought the sound quality was worth it.

I'm not a big enough fan of classical music to spend a lot of money on it.
