Looks like 7 inch reels (the printing on the side looks like 1200 ft. 1 1/2 mil plastic) which means at 15ips, about 15 minutes a side. They may be originals, don't think that Ampex was making tape back in the early '50's. There is one shot of some pancakes, which are on standard NAB hubs, which means 10.5" reels, but most of them are 7" reels. Could be originals, but it means that 115 reels have at most 25-30 hours worth of music of unknown quality (for $40K?).

but wouldn't 15 minutes per side be too short to master an album side?

Not sure. Many of those early albums were very short. Six songs a side - 2 to 2 1/2 minutes per song. Don't know whether they can master part of a side, stop and change tapes and master the second part of the side. Got to ask my mastering engineer friends.

no, you would have to have two tape machines and switch to the second machine on the fly, you cant "stop" the cutting lathe.
