I have seen some of those decks in person at shows. The ATR deck with Mike Spitz sitting next to it was the one I heard in Jonathan Tinn's room at the first RMAF show I attended. I will never forget listening to St. James Infirmary from the 30ips master tape when it was just me and Mike sitting in JTinn's room when they left to eat dinner.
Micro Seiki SX-8000 table with flywheel, SME 3012R arm, SME 312S arm, Lyra Etna SL and Dynavector XV-1S cartridges, ARC Ref 3 phono stage, Otari MX-55 tape deck, Ampex 350 repros, Roon Nucleus Plus server, PS Audio DSJ DAC, ARC Ref 6 pre, ARC Ref 75 amp, Parasound JC5 amp, JBL 4345 speakers, and Def Tech Ref subs.

IIRC, that was the show where we were also able to compare 1X DSD vs. the tape?

Yes, Mark. Speed matters. 30 ips is magic.

Neil Young's tape recorder used during his Massey Hall 1971 concert. Does anyone know what it was?

The photo is too blurry to pick out the tape machine's distinct features for proper ID, John. But the tape must be on 7" reels and must have been running at slow speed such as 7.5 ips I would guess.

I looked around and couldn't find an answer about the tape deck and yes, it appears to be 7" and likely 7.5ips. I'm wondering if these were the tapes used for the eventual vinyl release. If so, 7.5ips sounds pretty darned nice.

If the machine was using 7" reels and running at 7.5 ips, it probably was one of the consumer decks. If the machine was calibrated correctly, 30Hz to 10Khz would have been fine.

Coltrane's Giant Steps on Atlantic (at least if that's the picture of THE master tape on the cover of the record) was recorded at 7-1/2 ips.

Harry Weisfeld's recently acquired (through Chad) Ampex ATR-102. Tell you what. That 102 sounded wonderful stock playing all of my tapes through the Blade 1!
