  • RCA Living Stereo Tapes

Check it out! Very cool reelography of 2-track, 7-1/2 ips RCA Living Stereo Tapes. Seems rarer than the proverbial hen’s teeth and going for stupid prices on ePay. The few I’ve heard are very good, however, and in some ways still better than the original or reissued LPs.

Myles, thanks for the post. You can see that the price for the tape is three times the price of a record!

I have 3 RCA 2 track (inline) tapes - the Offenbach Gaite Parisienne Fiedler, Brahms Violin Concerto Heifetz and the Bob and Ray Throw a Stereo Party (They visit a Haunted House) on stereo 2 track, 7.5ips. I have to listen to them again - but they all look abridged or have parts missing. The Offenbach and Brahms are the later covers - from 1957 according to the website, although my Gaite Parisienne has the retail price - $14.95 printed on the cover, the Brahms does not. What is neat is these were the first stereo issues of these albums - well before the stereo records came out. I remember seeing reviews from High Fidelity magazine which just featured reviews of tapes - stereo 2 tracks before any stereo records came out. R.D. Darrell wrote the column in the mid-50's IIRC.

I'm just now playing the Gaite Parisienne. Looks like the album is complete. The tape is acetate, but looks like it is 1 mil - so the 40 minutes fits easily on a 7 inch reel. Will be playing the Brahms next. I definitely remember the Bob and Ray is missing a section at the haunted house that is on the vinyl, but I can't find that tape.

A (later) quarter-track title...but excellent material and a quality dubbing nonetheless: Click image for larger version

What’s interesting is the price. A small fortune back then. Of course, sellers seem to have gotten smart about these early stereo tapes and are getting an arm and a leg for them. Not paying $200.
