An alternative approach to buying a tape machine and adding on outboard electronics, heads, wiring etc. is investing in a turnkey machine. Everything in one unit, upgraded and with warranty. In essence, like a new machine. Nothing here is left to chance. It's not just the new improved tape machine electronics but the design, thought and execution that makes these machines stand out. Every part, trace and wire in the machine has been evaluated before use.

The leading machine on the market is Greg Beron's United Home Audio decks ranging now in price from the entry level Phase 1 retailing for $6500 to the full blown, all out attack on the state-of-the-art Ultima One with a base price of $20K and depending upon options such as Outboard Power supply (OPS) up to $30K. But you can take it to the bank that the Ultima One will surely knock your socks off and provide a listening experience unlike you've ever had before.

$6500 for a modified machine is certainly a good entry point for someone to get into tape. In addition, the UHA machines can be upgraded down the road. The UHA machines are available in different colors and options include remote control, feet and dust covers.

I can't argue with this post...still happy I went this way. There is no Studer service near me. I was drooling over the $31,000 ATAE A820 on eBay recently. I simply don't have the space!

Have some pics to share Christian? Why don't you do a video shoot of tape playing on your system for everyone to hear?

I will try to put something together soon. iPhone not exactly hi fidelity recording. I have been thinking about doing a video tour again of my system...not up to the pro standards of Peter's at AVS, but I think I can do well with the iphone narrating and posting up on youtube. I could demo the deck then. Stay tuned.

No Ken actually will eventually be a list of options available for people who are sitting on the fence regarding reel-to-reel tape machines or interested in getting more information on modern tape decks. Long overdue in my book. And ad? Hardly. Greg's decks are the real deal not to mention no fuss, no muss option!

Not only that, I wanted to create a thread for UHA decks owners to share their experiences about their decks. As well as Doshi, King-Cello and eventually more. Tape deck owners are pretty proud of their decks.

Plus I have wanted for the longest time to make this site the go to Board for information on the renaissance in reel-to-reel hardware and software. In case you haven't noticed, we have quite a contingent of tapeheads here as well as some of the best sources for information too.

A bit off topic but has anyone who has a tape deck and done a transfer to dsd 128 and did a comparison ?
I have many that are rips of vinyl and tape to dsd 128 while I don't have a deck or does please my small brain like analog does it's N obvious enriching type sound.
I have the cars on tape and vinyl a long story why both. What if I say I like the vinyl better my gues it's the eq due to RIAA stuff. Seems to be the same mix.
I intend to post that as well.

Bob Witrak does a lot of tape transfers (HDTT) including many at DSD256 (using a Merging HAPI) from 15ips 2 track. IIRC he uses a Studer 810 to do the transfers.

I've had reel decks since I was in HS. When I heard about what was happening with reel tapes like the Tape Project I jumped in with both feet. I now have a nice little collection of decks and always have two in my system. I rotate them every few weeks but my UHA deck is a constant reference unit. It is amazing in every aspect - looks, tape handling and performance.
