  • Atma-Sphere tape EQ option

We've not offered a stand-alone tape section, but a number of customers have asked if it was possible to add tape EQ to our phono sections. It was.

Usually we have the EQ set up for IEC at 7.5/15 ips. This option is available on our MP-1 and MP-3 preamps equipped with a phono section. We usually add an additional input on the rear panel (balanced of course but with tubes; we were the first to do balanced doncha know) and add the additional switching to the front panel.

Make this throwback Friday! Just like the old McIntosh preamps!

Ralph, IMO what the world needs now are more tape preamp options, not that good ones don't already exist. How about a stand alone pre with IEC and NAB curves, front panel eq adjustment and user adjustable gain options...maybe built in line xfmrs for balance out?

Sounds like the Doshi unit I'm using now!!

Very interesting preamp. I am using a preamp designed by my good friend the late Allen Wright, who's concepts were very similar to this preamp. I built this as a prototype 15 years ago, and retired it after I received a production unit. After modifying it for tape Eq, I was astonished by how good it sounded. I truly believe balanced differential design with tight regulation (shunt PS regulators and constant current sinks) is the way to go.

      What machine are you using?

We are considering a high gain unit that is designed for phono and tape with multiple inputs and EQ curves. No need for those pesky output transformers when we can direct-couple it though

Cathode follower output stage? Are you planning on passive eq, which should be easy to implement in a differential design?

More than likely it would have our direct-coupled output. Phono sections do seem to be more stable with passive EQ.
